Jeez...I really miss having to resize my FS entry for DPC....Not! Hurray! Anyway this one won from my pool this month. I had another but excessive cloning due to a dirty window may have led to some advanced rules no no's so I'll let it be. This one is a bit dicey too, but no where near as bad as the other. As long as it finishes better than last month....which was about as close to a brown ribbon (391 / 403 3%) as I've ever gotten, I'll be happy.

This is towards the end of the Broad Street underground concourse in Philly. You can walk underground from Locust Street, where this was shot, all the way to JFK Blvd. Great for bad weather if you are headed in that direction. Shot on a Sunday afternoon just for the heck of it. Hand held but I was braced against the wall and with the Sigma OS on it came out fairly sharp.

Post: Camera Raw adjustments in PSElements 6.0.
Layer adjustments for levels, brightness/contrast and hue saturation.
No crop....as I recall.
Adjust sharpness.
Another layer of levels and a layer of gradient map converting to greyscale.
Open the levels dialog up and adjusted each of the RGB channels.
Cloned out the fuzzy upper torso of a piegeon at bottom near center and a power line on the upper right.
Spot edit for dust.
Resize.
USM.

I like the processing and contrast, but I'm wishing there was something else here - a person, perhaps.

The repeated columns form a strong element.

In a FS this is going to be judged hard (IMO), unfortunately the ones that are going to do well are the landscapes, water drops and bugs...*sigh*

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: You have the exposure and focus across the scene here just right and I suspect that wasn't as straightforward as it might appear. I really like the repeating pattern of the pillars and I particularly like the patterned wall back right of the image.

Critical stuff: Of course, one of the things that makes the scene remarkable - the emptiness limits the amount of intrinsic interest in this scene and that will be a problem for some.

Overall: A very well executed capture of an everyday scene.
