Challenge: Free Study 2009-10 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Cover shot for a local magazine. All the other photos I took that day were shot indoors but this one I wanted some nice wind so I shot outdoors. Unfortunately, it was a bit too windy at times so I needed two people to hold the light stands even though there were plenty of weights on them.

Lighting Setup

- AB1600 in beauty dish (above camera right)
- Sigma speedlite in beauty dish (camera axis left side)
- Quantaray speedlite in small softbox (model axis left side)

Post work

- Retouched the coat and model (clone/heal/liquidfy).
- Boosted detail (Color Efex Pro Tonal Contrast, dodge/burn, curves).
- Duotone conversion (Silver Efex Pro)

That's pretty much it. There's also a lot of refinement going on. For example, the coat was originally green so before I converted it to monotone I adjusted the saturation so that I can get the right balance in tones with the rest of the image. Despite the refinements there are still things I wish I had fixed.

It is a great work of creativity. I like the tone and processing, more or less. But there is one thing that stands out as breaking the spell you are weaving; that is the shadow under the jaw. It makes the face look more like a mask than a face, if you see what I mean. For me, that takes away the naturalness of the situation.

Congrats with top 10 yanko. Should have scored better though. Lighting, clarity and particularily transitions in skin tones are excellent.

Technically wonderful and professionally executed, and a unique and perfectly done duotone, but nothing for me to connect with. 7 for the technicals.

great quality image. Is it to advertise the jacket? Otherwise I don't quite get why you cut the top off her head.
It's sure to do well anyway so don't mind me.

Crop/framing isn't for me. If it were a fashion shoot maybe, but otherwise not sure I'd sacrifice a beautiful model's face/hair while keeping all of a jacket. Sorry. Still a 7 for lighting and interesting lines of her pose.

(No vote, just a comment) Very elegant. FWIW, I find my self wanting to see just a little bit more of her forehead.
