Challenge: Free Study 2009-10 (Advanced Editing VII)

Location: Sydney Australia
Date: Oct 4, 2009
Aperture: f/8

I set out on one of my street walks looking for something on the theme of "Urban Innocence" but after a few hours of walking round had nothing good to show for it.

Just as I was heading home I came across this scene and thought it fitted perfectly. Took a fair bit of editing to get it to this stage though.

RAW adjusted, cropped, straightened in Aperture. Converted to B&W in Silver Efex.

Burned the light above the couple to reshape it slightly to point more at them. Burned the pillars, the ground and the guy in the middle to give the rest of the scene a slightly darker mood.
Fairly strong USM to bring out some details, followed by Nik Define with a slightly over strong noise reduction which gives it a nice softness as well as removed the vast amounts of noise.

Post Challenge:

Thank you all for the comments on this one. Very pleased with the two awards, especially on a Free Study where there was so much good stuff around!

I knew when I entered it that it wouldn't score particularly well, though just before rollover it was sitting just above 6 but I got a few points chopped off at rollover to bring me back down below.

Wow! It looks like a collage of multiple shots blended seamlessly into one. Lots of stories captured in one scene, and yet i dont get the feeling that they are competing for my attention. It's like capturing a trilogy in a single frame. Great job.

I really like this shot, my eye is naturally drawn to the two kids in the light but with the everything else that is going on in the right of the frame it makes a an interesting shot that captivates.

Yeah I liked this one a lot too. My 8 didn't push you over that 6 average though, pity, it certainly deserved to go there and beyond.

Very cool. Dramatic lighting and the two pairs of subjects complement each other to good effect.

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: What a rich picture - it has a really art-like composition, I feel my eye being led around the image. Each character brings their own special interest to the picture. Given the focus on the young couple, you'd think that the other two characters would be eclipsed but they're not. I really like the environmental framing too.

Critical stuff: Noting at all

Overall: A great image - so much story, it's almost theatre.

is that girl a mannequin?! i suspect not. nice street shot though. I'd rate it higher if I knew she was a mannequin. 7
