Challenge: Waiting (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Pentax Optio 555
Location: Gisborne, Victoria, Australia
Date: Jun 6, 2004
Aperture: 3.8
ISO: 64
Shutter: 1/250s

Date Uploaded: Jun 6, 2004

Taken just before sunset. My mum posed for me at the train station in country Victoria (Australia). I liked the shadow created by the grass on the left and the lines created by her jumper and the boards in the door and wall.

Post processing: Cropping, levels.

Dan,

Thanks for the critique. I appreciate you coming back to it, especially after your original comment. That first comment made me sit up and think about it and this critique has given me a good way forward. I'm going to have another go at it and see how it looks in B/W.

From the Critique Club:
This composition has several good things going for it. Notice that where the horizontal and vertical lines meet is where we find the model. All rules can be broken and in this case I like the negative space in the back. The sitting position works well because it gives the image the corner heavy feel. The eyes follow the lines and it all leads to the subject. However, as good as all this is, the title as applied to the image does not impart the sense of waiting. Yes, the avenue chosen is rather abstract and who is to make the final judgment. The colors go well, but personally, I would have presented it in black and white and simply let the lines dominate without the value of color. In Black and white it would make the hot-spots in the model's face more pleasing.
All in all, the composition received thought and attention to detail and has merit despite its abstract sense. It made good use of long sweeping lines, nice texture and a good time to project a nice shadow. dan

This composition makes a good photo, but doesn't really communicate waiting. If there was a camera or telescope, or something else that they were waiting to use, I might sense waiting. That aside, I do really like this. All the lines that cross in interesting ways, the colors, and the look of concentration on the model all work really well together.

Great lighting - perfect time of day, nice shadows. It does convey a feeling of waiting. Compositionally - it would be tons stronger if the negative space were in FRONT of the model instead of behind.

nice idea, perhaps it will look stronger in black and white.
