Cropped, but otherwise straight from the camera. I'm not sure if the flare was caused by the cloud layer.

I had an ND4 filter on the lens (plus an ND .3 sheet - I bought the wrong one! - held over the lens for some of my shots).

In a pinch, the dark glass lens from a welding hood would work nicely as a ND filter for this scene. Most of them are ND 10 or 12, plus a green tint.
I am glad that you had clear sky for the event.
