Challenge: Deep DOF (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Sony DSC-F828
Location: Downtown Calgary during evening rush hour
Date: May 31, 2004
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 64
Shutter: 20
Date Uploaded: May 31, 2004

The purpose of this picture was to create layers within the picture and deep DOF. From the sidewalk, to the different speeds of traffic, and then to the buildings in the background at varying distances. I was hoping to accomplish the challenge theme without the use of landscape shots.

The photo was taken in downtown Calgary during evening rush hour. It was a bright, overcast evening. Shutter was slowed to give the passing traffic a blurred effect.

Post processing: The car in the closest lane was actually stationary. Photoshop was used to add a radial blur to the wheels. A second layer was given motion blur to the same car to add the movment in the rear end. The only other post processing included levels and color adjustment.

As much as I love VWs (I own one myself) I must deduct brownie points because the roofline of the building is not even and the frame/border is a bit distracting. However, the amount of details of the Golf and of the farthest building are nice and clear. Contrast/saturation is very good, as well. I give you a 7.

On a side note, do you visit vortex at all?

While motion blur can add visual interest to a photo I'm not finding that it's working very hard in this shot. Perhaps if all the cars didn't seem to be the same color? The whole scene appears rather mundane and grey.

this would be so much better without the distracting border. I'm usually not against such borders, but I found it very unfitting of this photo. I also wish it weren't quite so washed out next to the main building. A very good shot, aside from those small things.
