A shot of the marina where I am staying this week. I don't know the name of this plant, but I liked the view through the blossoms(?). Again, working on my laptop so my pp isn't what I'd like.

They're like sentinels aren't they?

The brightly coloured flowers (red hot pokers to me) make a great foreground in front of the greys of the marina and sky.

I've never seen those flowers but the make an excellent focal subject. Almost like a little race of alien pods popping up!

Lutchenko is spot on with both botanical and common name. very interesting plant... grows only as an annual in my climate. they are surprisingly easy to grow. i wonder if they are naturalized here?
this image demonstrates the "poker" very nicely. love it!

well i posted my last comment and decided to google 'stark' .. i was thinking along the lines of contrasty and rugged sort'v .. this is wot i found out about stark ..
"The meaning of the word stark is bare or barren
The word stark has had an interesting history. Originally it meant "strong" in Old English (and a very similar word still does in German), it came to mean "utter" and then through confusion with another OE word meaning "rump" came the phrase stark naked which is an emphasised form of being naked (naked being naked, after all). Stark also has connotations of spareness and lack of detail, as in "the skyscraper stood out starkly against the backdrop of forest". "

so it wasnt quite the word i was meaning after all .. altho strong comes close ..

You're right, the flowers really add the punch point for this image.. I'm sure once you get home you'll be more satisfied with the pp. In general I'd say the main issue with the pp here would be the halos.... but as you said a laptop is not always an ideal tool :S

I belive they could be Kniphofia-'Tritoma', better known as 'Red Hot Poker'
Not that I'm a keen or knowledgable gardener, quite the opposite lol
Very nice calming image this one.
