I had a magnifier on my macro lens and was taking pictures of individual dead flowers on a lilac bush. This creature appeared in the darkroom. I never saw him on the flower. He was barely visible on the original. I had to bring him out with high pass sharpening and curves and channel mixer.

I am overdue for a brown ribbon.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: OMG I have to critique one of Don's pix, I not only have to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about, it also won the brown...! But this shot does grow on you.

Technical: Comp OK, lighting is ambient, maybe ap open a little more to 1/100 or so and f-stop one or two higher. Just a teeny-tiny itty-bitty bit oof.

Artistic: Very impressionistic, the dead leaves and blurry b/g give it a sense of surreality. Does that make sense? Actually the glowy blur does make the bug's wings look somewhat ethereal. Quite nice.

Overall: Ummm....err....*scratching head* I actually cannot think of a way to improve upon this shot. Well done! :-)

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

Congratulations on your ribbon. I really like this image. The blur and color blends are very pleasing to me. I like the grain too. And the subject is obviously very small and is sharp enough. So be proud of your ribbon. You earned it the hard way -- with a good image.

The glow is what makes this for me. And the oof is convincing. It's actually quite nice.

'I am overdue for a brown ribbon.'

Maybe, but you shouldn't have got one for this.

Congrats on your achievement, I think. I had actually suspected pointandshoot's entry was yours.

Well, congrats on your overdue brown, since you seem to think it is, but I'm way more overdue than you :-)

I don't know if including the cross makes this a "recursive double entendre", or a "triple entendre", or neither. Whatever it is, it is an excellent photo. I give it a 10 for the photo and another 10 for the title. However, this is the only photo I'm voting on, so my 10's won't count.

Really blurry and grainy, but it's also got a glow about it that I like.

Ha! I love the title! The image isn't quite sharp enough to score well, I fear. But, the colors are fantastic.

Now what can a man need?
a bottle of vodka and a few shekels to his name.
