Man...there were so many photos...I'm sorry I missed this one... GREAT! The title is perfect. They're communicating with someone, but completely 'disconnected' from those around physically next to them.

I completely agree with MilesW - this was a 10 and a fave for me and I completely expected it to score much closer to the top.

A very disappointing score for what is a brilliant shot :-(

Great shot. Life in America. Yes, we're friendly people, but we can't talk with those right around us - we have to talk to those on the other end of the phone.

This is a fantastic shot - you've perfectly captured a scene that is played out in a thousand conference halls, but with a variety of poses and a separation between subjects that illustrates how people try to get some private space when is a completely public area. Brilliant.

IN many ways this is utterly fascinating; I find myself studying each of the "characters" for clues as to their identity/business/state of mind. It bothers me that the prominent wall junction is not squared up a little better, easy enough to do with a little skew tool. But the deal-breaker, for me, is that the image seems seriously oversharpened, and I'm picking up fine halo-type outlining of the figures against the neutral walls. That's holding it back from climbing into the 8's, and it will stay at 7 in my scoring.

Nevertheless, well seen and a pleasure to contemplate.

There is pure whimsy in the fact that this looks so real and so staged at the same time. Fascinating photograph!

I remember seeing this a long time ago and liked it, and still do. This is one of those moments where everything falls into place and you were fortunate enough to be there. Just a nitpick, but I see some sharpening halos.

Well the theme is a good one, if not exactly rare (though this is a superior example) but the hidden gem within your hidden gem is that small, stout lady only part seen. Could she be clutching a cell phone too? Checking in with her office ... "Hi, it's me. No, totally bloody boring. No, nothing new at all. Complete waste of time. Any messages?"

03/14/2009 05:46:17 PM
The only thing that doesn't work for me in this shot is the distortion of the two figures on the left. Great set up, lighting, details.

how funny...was it a cell phone convention...really like the tones...and if the lady in the background is using a cell phone...that would be to funny

Excellent! Technically and creatively. I like this very much. Very nice black and white work. Super detail and contrast and lovely tones. Great title too.
How did you set this up? Do you know all these people? Just a pity the one odd person out is half hidden behind the central character. I am talking about the little old lady. Would have been perfect if she was fully visible too. 9

where'd that li'l ol' lady come from?

I'm looking at this for the second time still trying to work out if it's posed. I didn't see the lady the first time around - she might have registered as a vase or something.
good luck

Fast paced world. With everyone on the phone I had to look twice. I thought they were all the same person at first glance. This should be in a "how business get's done" type ad.

What a great 'statement' photo that reflects upon the state of human beings in this century. Amazing how with so many technological advances that we have a tiny fully portable communications device that we can be so disconnected from our surroundings and other people. Love this capture of so many people talking on their cell phones 'connecting' with people distant at a remote location while each and every one of them are seperated by distance from each other and not noticing or looking at anyone in the room. Ironic - they are connected but disconnected and that is such a poignant statement in this composition that comes in so loud and clear. You have a great eye to spot this or if posed you realized your idea beautifully and with much gravitas. I also like the B&W for a color version I feel would mute the message by distracting the viewer with colors. I also want to complement you on the wonderful dynamic B&W tones I see here. Well done all around.

I love it, almost everybody on the phone or dialing. The lady on the left is poorly positioned. The guy in front looks distorted. Is this very wide angle?
