I read your message in the forum and I'm here. I actually like the photo. I wish I could do a black and white like you did. For me, the main subject is the bicep with the tattoo and not so much of the mask that the model is wearing. Perhaps too much is going on in one photo? Maybe it will score better had the model not wear the mask. Just my opinion, but I like it nonetheless.

cytoxan is quite correct; I am a lot older than you and so there's likely to be a communication gap between us. I gave it a 5, which is well above average for me (my average in this challenge was about 4.0 I think). My comment during voting was that it is a nicely-made photograph but of no apparent substance beyond that. Tattoo + armpit + gas mask ... presumably it's a combination that must mean something? Unless of course its point is to not have one. Alas, nobody (including you) has given we crusty old dudes any hint as to its meaning. Nevertheless, it was well inside my top 20% in the challenge.

I thought this was a very intriguing photograph. I understand your concern for the score though. It seems as though some photographs on the site "require" too much imagination. LOL...but, I do like this photograph. Especially with the mask the man is placing over his head. Totally fits the challange if you ask me.... was unable to give you a score, since I just recently (2 weeks ago) joined the site. Im looking forward to seeing more of your work! =)

Gave it a 7. I'm not a fan of arm pits but this wasn't offensive.

I voted this image a 5. Not that I find anything terribly wrong with it... I guess the only critique that I could give on your composition is the background on the left side. I think if it was completely blacked out, it would give more focus on the gas mask/arm/tatoo... as it is, my eyes sometimes wander to the left.

For me, it was the subject that failed to catch my interest. Which isnt to say that it is a bad image, because it isnt, just that with something as outside of the box as this, and as alternative as this, some voters just wont find it interesting, while others will really like it.

I was one of your 9 votes also. Now just to find the last one LOL.I liked the image and thought that the trees being out of focus behind the subject added to the dreary look and feel of the photo which is what you seemed to be going for. I am more into the macabre H. P. Lovecraft and H. R. Giger style of art and imagery that this picture seems to convey for me. Unfortunately, most on this site and maybe most of the population in general (and some just don't like to admit that they are for fear that others may see them as weird) don't seem to enjoy it. I enjoyed the shot and keep up the good work no matter who likes or doesn't like it.

Edit*** I looked through the other posts and noticed ubique comments on the tattoo. Not to call him out but it seems that there is a bit of an older crowd on DPC. I noticed that he is 58 and you are 17. There will be a LOT of different views whenever there are generation gaps of this magnitude voting on the same images.

I can't find anything truly wrong with it, but neither can I find anything truly right with it either. It's a 6 image in my head, and what I would suggest is that it was simply the wrong image for a Free Study. In another context this might have stood out, but surrounded by 400+ photographs, your bell curve says everything. It didn't stand out for the majority of people.

Sometimes that just happens for no real reason at all, especially in the Free Studies. Our work just gets lost to the masses.

Take comfort, however, in the few that enjoyed it, and 8 in-challenge comments on a mid-5 shot is a wonderful achievement.

It's really different and makes me examine it a bit. My only critique may be that the centered comp makes my eye land on his tattoo and I don't notice the gas mask for a bit. The OOF trees on the left don't seem to add anything to the image for me.

I think it did not do higher simply because it is a grim image.

In my opinion, nothing wrong with it at all. I quite like it.

I didn't know this had anything to do with a band, but I thought it was a striking and unique image and am happy to have been one of your "9" votes. An underrated image for sure.

Very unique and cool photo. Great use of B/W here. Plus like how the mask is cropped in half. Well done. 8

Such an unusual sentiment to brand your skin with ... presumably it's a declaration of affection, punctuated by an armpit; very classy. It's a nicely-made photograph although of no apparent substance beyond that.
