To get a high contrast with the frosted glass, I used a black poster board under the chessboard and as a backdrop. I decided to go with a single light source. Used a "Happy Light" because it is bright and diffuse.

as for editing, I used unsharp mask, brightness/contrast, dodge and burn, and cloned out a few dust specs on the glass.

I'm hoping that the original artist of "Black is checkmated" will appreciate my take on their idea.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Looking at the original image, this has a big improvement. the lighting is much softer and overall has a soothing feel to it.

My eyes keep searching for more in this image, I would have loved to see some more and not cropped so abruptly at the top. Also I don't see a reason to use a shallower depth of field here. the blur on the foreground subjects is distracting IMO.

For the same image, I would think a deeper depth of field will help. Also sharpening after resizing would make things better here.

Please feel free to contact for any questions you have.

Checked the original. Big improvement here.
Very nice clarity and detail with lovely frosty blue colors. I feel it could have been even nicer still if you had used the allowable height of the frame to full advantage thereby not cropping of the tops of the pieces at the top of the frame and having a bit more space at the bottom of the frame. 6

Though better than the original, there is a lack of clarity and transparency to this shot.
