I know that I have another version of a picture very similar to this one in my portfolio that has gotten fairly good exposure (for me anyways), but I can't help but love this photo and I wouldn't feel right entering anything else into the Best of 2008. Hopefully it doesn't get too much backlash from being recognized, but the score isn't really what I'm concerned about anymore =)
Taken at the Neuschwanstein castle in Germany. This was back in the woods on a tiny little trail that was completely abandoned due to the cold and fog. However, to me, that made the photograph-the ethereal fog that creates such a sense of mystery as to where the path leads.
PP: Layers, selective clarity and diffusion in Lightroom, warmed it up a bit, a tad bit of contrast, and cloned out a few bothersome rocks.

Looks familiar. I know I've seen this in the forums, but I don't recall whose it is. I liked it the first time I saw it as well. The gradual fade into the mist is wonderful.
In the mists of time and place, along a path long forgotten, lies the way to a future that we can never conceive. As the mists coalesce into dew, building upon the boughs and the branches, to finally trace a path through the emptiness and strike the waters below, one man sets upon that path. Finding it by luck and random chance, lost for days in the thick and unforgiving forest, he goes to his knees and gives a thankful cry.
And so with one foot in front of the other, he sets off down this salvation, into the deepening fog, his form turning to shadow, then melting away, towards what he hopes is civilization and rescue. Instead, he unwittingly enters a world that is not his own, a world apart and between, a world of horror and fantasy, and is lost to time.
