 I was unsure what to enter into this challenge. 2008 was a great year but most of my favorite artistic photography had either been entered into a challenge or just didn't grab me as a shot to enter into the best of 2008. This was an outtake from a free study challenge:

It got some good feedback in my portfolio, and I thought it would be interesting to see what other feedback yall might have on it.

I thought about entering this shot, but I went back and checked the original and the editing wasn't legal. There was a bag on the ground in the background that I had to clone out to get the solid black.


Wow what a response. It was interesting to see the differences in score and responses between this one and my original free study image. Thanks for the comments.

Pose and lighting are truly amazing! I can't wait to learn more about your setup. It appears you have side lighting from both sides and also back/rim lighting. My guess is you have two light sources on each side slightly behind. I also love how your subject is beautifully lit with minimal light on the floor and black background. Thanks for making and sharing this wonderful shot! 10

I can't say it's an attractive pose, however there is some seriously good geometry here. Great job with the lighting.

Amazing pose and good lighting - I'm not sure whether the chalk adds or detracts from the shot. . . it certainly adds realism - but also dtracts from the clean simple lines.

I have a soft spot for ballerinas. The lines are wonderful, I usually wouldn't be a big fan of the darkness but it seems to work here. Beautifully executed. 8
