Challenge: Sand (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Sand Box
Date: Jan 2, 2009
Aperture: 4
ISO: 640
Shutter: 125
Galleries: Black and White, Children
Date Uploaded: Jan 2, 2009

Week 2, Photo-a-Week 2009. Borrowed from the sand challenge because I love the photograph.

Nephew 2 of 3, Nicolai. Taken late in the day at a park.

*********

I chose the shallow DOF to present those pudgey toes prominently. They are not painted, just an effect of the BW processing.

I also happen to like the depth of the negative space. For me, it makes me wonder about the location. Particulrly because he appears to dressed warmly, so I imagine him on a cold, windswept beach in the winter, with less adventourous parents scowling at the audacity of an infant freezing in the sand. Naturally they don't see the smile and joy of wonderment in his eyes as he looks out over the Pacific while exploring the scratchy stuff on his hands and feet.

Come on, you did not get that from the photograph!? ;)

DOF is perfect, imho. Love the choice of sepia-tone for the sand challenge lol

This is one of those shots that is really good... and I'm itchin to see it in a diptych with a more full shot of him..

Interesting as well although not as good as the first. Very crisp and sharp though and good use of shallow DOF.

This is a perfect companion piece to the other sandbox shot. This is too good to get a higher score from many of the DPC voters, such a shame.

Seems this should've scored higher, but hey, what do I know? Love the simplicity of the hands and feet - adds to the story, imo.

Just stumbled upon this when looking at another entry in the sand challenge. I didn't vote in this challenge but would have voted this high. I love that it's different and the DOF is wonderful. Precious little sandy toesies were captured beautifully...makes me feel the texture of the pudgy little warm toes and the course cool sand. Nice.

This one is also great in the series. I didn't like sepia colors though compared the the first one. Excellent DOF.

Also a very nice photo, although I prefer the more B&W of week 1.

I didn't vote on this challenge, but I certainly would have voted this high. Again, the tones are very nice.

Wow, this is such a great shot! Just wish the hand were not in the way of the rest of the foot.

I agree the toes make it

No doubt about it for me. The DOF isolates the subject perfectly and the whole composition is very evocative of childhood fun in the sand. Very under rated imho.

Personally, I think this is wonderful. More DOF wouldn't add anything at all.

I can see the dichotomy of opinion on the focus - maybe on that redundant space top left as well - but those yikkle pudgy toes just win it all...

Your in-challenge commenters are divided on the dof: some like it, some don't. I'm in the "wish there were more dof" camp, but it's a charming photo nonetheless. Should've scored higher in my opinion.

7.25 - Nice feel with the processing, that and the angle/image itself helps me feel the sand too. I like the composition but I'm too distracted by the oof fore, once I notice it. Like the focal point(s) though and the vague background.

Baby toes + stubby fingers + DOF + great textures + sepia = top 10 shot.

That the toenails are painted made me smile. I would like to have seen more DOF but it still is fun and made me smile. Good photos always evoke emotion and this one does.
