Shimobashira - ice pillars. I surmise that it's caused by water freezing in the soil and being pushed up as the ice expands.
The winters here (in this part of Japan) and where I grew up, in Canberra, are remarkably similar, but I do not recall ever seeing such a phenomenon when I was a wee lad.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get in real close and comfortably taking pics as the ground was wet. If I had realised it, I could have worked on the bokeh effect more. ;-Þ

this is brilliant david .. its such a wonderful looking abstract yet sort'v identifiable ... interesting about the winters being similar in japan and canberra .. :)
