Challenge: Fill Flash (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Location: Palm Bay, Florida
Date: Dec 7, 2008
Aperture: f/3.5

I shot this at a skate park in Palm Bay, Florida of a BMX stunt rider catching air off a ramp. It was the second shot of the evening and I really wished the moon were larger in the frame. I used a Canon Speedlight 580 on camera to provide the fill light to meet the challenge.

I thought of cropping a lot off the bottom but when I did the image loses the feeling of height. I think the fact that I didn't crop it is what people are going to dislike about it in voting but we shall see.

If the rules were for advanced editing I would have done a lot of "painting with light" to darken the trees and the yellow door a little. I would also remove the light pole from the right hand side and added a heavier vignette.

Greetings from the Critique Club...

I was not able to vote on this challenge, but if I had, I probably would have given you a 5 or 6.

My first reaction, before reading your comments, was that there is too much space at the bottom of the photograph. I would like to see a version with 2/3 of the ramp cropped off. I think this would allow the viewer to focus more on the fact that the biker is in the air, and would also help keep the viewers eye looking up into the sky. As it stands, I find myself looking up and down trying to find the focal point. The exposure is very good, and the moon in the sky is an excellent addition. Great shot.

If you need any clarification on any of my comments, please feel free to pm me. It might take some time for me to get back to you.
