Pinhole shot!

[Dec. 5th, 2008 06:11:02 PM]

I've been trying to figure out why I entered this shot in this challenge for a few days, and I think I've finally got it. Simple, really. Because I can.

Some comments on my comments so far:
Doc is wondering what I was going for. Maybe I wasn't going for anything?

MAK isn't sure about this one for a masters' free study. Apparently he thinks it might have been inappropriate for me to enter this shot in this challenge (because it's so bad)? Is that a kind of DNMC in a free study?

Post Challenge:

Thanks to everyone for the comments and votes! My first brown! I know most of you thought this sucked. I just appreciate that you took the time to look.

There's defiance here, in several forms - medium, presentation, title. Kudos.

inappropriate? did I say that? I don't think so.

besides.... 92 people agreed with me, 192 people thought it was worse than I did, & 46 thought it deserved better than I.

Brave to enter? yes, I would not of entered a shot from a pin-hole to a masters FS, but that's me.

DNMC? Never use the term, anything can be shoe-horned in.

good photo? - personally I don't think so, sorry, subject is not that interesting, lighting is not too bad, it is off focus (go figure, I should of guessed it was a pin-hole, silly me), lacks contrast too.

Even if I managed to work out it was someone being adventurous to enter with a shot from a home-made pin-hole I doubt I would of scored it any different, sorry if you got offended.

I'm in awe that you can hold still long enough for a pinhole self-portrait! Good on you for entering it. Darn fine pinhole - is it a homemade one or a storebought one?

How dare you! j/k

MAK and ES are simply wrong in saying what they have. Naughty naughty fellas.

Nathan, did you think about incorporating the fact it was a pinhole image in the title or by other means? I'm sure it would have radically changed your score. I understand the fact you didn't though, but on the other hand, this is DPC. Or maybe you thought only master voters would vote in this one. ;] Nonetheless a great shot but I'm saying that based upon knowing the facts about how this was taken, not the final result. Last pinhole shot I analyzed was maybe 35 years ago when I last tried it. eheh

Nathan, way to go my good man! Sadly I do think you should have submitted something different, your profile image would have scored much better imho. Or, a different edit (landscape or even a square crop would have worked better) and of course, black and white.

I'm not sure about this one for a masters free study, it is simple with little editing but lack a bit of impact for my personal taste.

hmmm...blurry and off colorcast. Me thinks intentional.

yup. just you. self-portraits are always a great thing to do, particularly rare to see a self portrait where you can actually see the photographer. braver than most.

I'm giving it a shot to see what you were going for, but it escapes me. The half/half lighting on the face is classic, but the rest of the composition and technicals really lack. 4

Looking at this picture makes me think of the words "melancholy" and "despondent."
