I'm impressed with myself but I'm sure it's not an overwhelmingly excellent photo. At the rate I'm scoring at, I'd be lucky for this to reach 5.5.

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: The right eye is crisp, but, as Ron mentioned, the overall image seems to be too soft. I think that this may be a product of that lens you use. Start saving those monies that you get from those paid shoots and start looking to upgrade. I also agree with Steve the wide angle makes the face look distorted and unnatural.

Lighting: I do like your use of backlighting, but the image tones seem very flat. This one needs a good deal more contrast and maybe even a small touch of fill flash.

Composition/Content: Again, either your lens or the angle you took to get the shot makes the face look distorted. I looked through your other images from this shoot, and shooting from above works best for her face shape.

My Opinion: I do have to disagree with Ray here and say that the image, at least as it is, scored pretty close to where I would have scored it. You did meet the challenge, but your execution and choice of subjects could have been a great deal stronger. I don't think its your eye for shooting, I just think that you were set on getting an image to enter into the challenge. You have some really nice captures from this same shoot, just none that would have fit this particular challenge.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide a critique on your entry,
Eric

I was one of the 57 4's you rec'd.

I'm not probably one to critique this that much as my take on 'Backlighting' wasn't very strong either...however, when I was voting I took this description of backlighting to heart:

(from the challenge description) "Backlighting is the idea of shining light at an object from behind, or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight. You can photograph anything you want, but the use of backlighting to enhance the photo is key."

Keywords of the description being highlight and enhance.

When this image first loaded I enjoyed the sense of fun and happiness about it. As far as backlighting is concerned I really don't see how this image is enhanced by backlighting at all. The subject is the person, and for all purposes seems to be a normal portrait type shot with a blown-out background. Obviously, JMO.

Well your average vote by commenters is exactly 5.5 which is what you said you'd be lucky to get! For what it's worth I think that 4.2 is a pretty harsh score.

What a lovely smile! I like the way her hair frames the lovely shape of her face. Her hair sort of fades into the sky a bit at the upper right. I might have tried a closer crop. 5

Nice use of backlighting. I think it would be nice to see more of her hair or something to see more backlighting? Her face takes up almost the entire frame.

Beautiful eyes and smile. The eyes were the first thing to pop out at me. The photo feels a tinny bit out of focus.
