 A tribute to Dave Montizambert, who's excellent book on creative lighting has surely been an inspiration.

Taken from a low angle with 100mm macro. Lighting is with 3 flashes, one shot through a 10cm corogrid at the lower part of the ball, one shot directly at the back of the ball and one shot at a red towel behind the ball.

Lightroom processing: Increased Ev, black clipping, clarity and saturation. PhotoImpact processing: Straightened, cropped, wb adjusted, curves and levels adjusted and sharpened.

Okay, it feels like manufactured drama, a tenuous connection to the theme. Top half rates a 8, bottom half rates a 2. Do the math.

I like the back lighting, but I don't care fore the dark shadow under the ball, a little more fill light.

This shot is right there.... but I feel like it just needs a little something more to add more drama or push it a bit. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that would be. good luck

I almost did something very similar to that! although you got an angle I didn't really think of doing. The backround is very good too.
