Challenge: Puzzle Macro II (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED
Location: Bletchly Park Museum
Date: Nov 16, 2008
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 1 EV under 200
Shutter: 1/1.6s
Galleries: Abstract
Date Uploaded: Nov 16, 2008

These dials are called the "Letchworh Enigma" and form part of the "Bombe" code breaking machine used in World War II to decode the German messages sent via their Enigma devices. The Bombe was developed by Alan Turing. It's ability to decoded the German messages was instrumental in ending the war.

Poor light and no flash photography resulted in wide open lens and long shutter speed on a tripod. I created 4 separate exposures from the master raw file and used Photomatix to create an HDR. The image was straightened cropped and sharpened ready for selective desaturation on the background. An s curve and some minor healing and a border to finish it off.

No a ribbon contender but, I have learned lots on this challenge.

Pretty flip but good guess.... Nice photo.

I am glad you described what this is. That makes it even more interesting.

Not really a macro but a nice image

A stumper, so meets the challenge. I like this image which is reminescent of Andy Warhol. Well done.

Great composition. Lighting seems a touch flat.

Nope.. I can't guess. But it is a cool picture

The inside of an old VCR tuner? Someone really likes the "Z" channel :)

is this circuitry from a phone or something like that?

Don't know what it is but it looks intriguing. Liky some crypto-contraption.

No, I can't, and I feel really stupid. It's a nice photo, though.

Simple clean lines. Have no idea what this is. Lighting and crisp focus is spot on.

No, but it must be sleeping since the arrows are all pointing to Zzzzzz's ;-) Looks vaguely electrical to me but that is hardly my area of expertise!

Very interesting! Is that a coding machine? You are lucky the inventor of that machine included these nice colours!

I'm gasping. What is this? A puzzling photo? It can't be. No OOF. No DOF, No bur, weird lighting, or super saturation. I don't know what to say. You have redefined the puzzle macro challenge for me.

My guess is some sort of old cryptography device. Even though I don't think it is the most beautiful photo that I will see in this challenge, I do think it is the most audacious and inspiring. Thank you for opening up my world. 10

Is this a macro? Those screws would have to be very, very tiny indeed.

I can't think of what it is - it's function seems almost like an enigma code machine, but it doesn't look like one...

I'm not a hundred percent sure this is a true macro. Looks like some sort of mechanical timer, or possibly a bank of potentiometers for adjusting some sort of electronic circuit. (Possibly color projection? As I see red green and yellow; is that the key?) However, this is a very good image. Focus is nice and sharp, colors are vivid, detail is held in the darker areas, highlights are not blown out. Whatever this is, it is a very interesting image and would do well as wall art in a buisness place.
