The centered composition works nicely for this subject. I like the little antennae balls. The blur and "noise" in the BG works fine for me. It puts the insect on the front burner that way. I like it.

Addressing the noise, I shot this at ISO 800. I dont have NN or any other noise software.

Good detail on the focal point of this image. The DOF works fine for me and does a nice job of eliminating distractions. I also like the comp and positioning of items in the frame. Only nit from me is the noisy bg...high ISO, or did you bring up the shadows (histogram/curves/levels) in post?

i dont think you could crop any closer without losing a lot of quality with the grain that's already present .
its a brilliant shot of that little insect which does look like a hoverfly, altho i'm not sure ...
love those little orange 'things' on the front of his head so sharply defined and the clarity of his head and proboscis .. i like the dof as well with the foreground and background blur which concentrates my eyes on the 'action' ..
great shot .. :)

Interesting angle to take this to isolate the Hoverfly and his dinner. The noise in the background could be toned down a bit though.

well, there's one in every crowd. I actually like the OOF because it shows off the
proboscis (?) of the critter AND the excellent detail of what it's going after.

Nice one.

I agree with the other comments here, the eyes are beautiful and the blurry foreground is somewhat distracting. There also a lot of noise in the background. Perhaps not the ultimate bug shot, but it's so nice to look at.

JMart - must be a pince-nez. Maybe it is old and can't see so close anymore.
Anyway - nice focus on the eyes of the insect, but I agree, the large blurry part in the foreground is a bit distracting for me as well.

Ewww. I wonder what that is on the nose :P The DOF here is so shallow & so much is out of the focal plane that the oof parts are too overwhelming for me. I might have tried cropping in close. The in focus parts are very sharp with nice colors. The petals make some nice texture although, as I mentioned, I might have sacrificed that to bring the focused parts out more prominently. Just my opinion of course.
