i know this is a queen because she is the only wasp currently on this nest which is hanging upside down from the barbed wire fence .. i was underneath her and the background blue is the sky ..
when this photograph was taken the nest was quite small, only about 1/2" wide .. she will build more cells in which to lay her eggs and it might get to be 3" wide .. the eggs she lays will eventually develop into other females who will be her colony .. males are laid later in the year nearer to the colder months and they will mate with the females who will hibernate over winter .. the females who survive winter will each construct a nest and lay their eggs .. and so the cycle continues ..

Cool. I took 250 shots of a bee exiting its hive yesterday. I had removed the hive from my shed last week and yesterday I started hearing a crackling sound behind me. To my amazement there was one little wasp in there and it was hatching. It's still in my studio here next to me, it hasn't left its hive yet. If I let it outside it'll freeze, it's like 2 degrees Celsius here. Guess he'll be my pet for now. lol

Love the colors of this wasp, very different from the one I have here. Its eyes are brown too, and textured, very nice. After the challenge send me a PM and i'll upload a pic or two if you'd like. a big fat 9 for you.

Nice Macro, with the blanked out background it's hard to determine if this was actually upside down or not, but looking at it's feet it looks like it probably was.

Lovely focus on the main eye, the crop might be a little tight at the bottom though.
