So often (especially in this college town of State College, PA, home of Penn State University) our athletes are placed on a pedestal of importance that exceeds their mortal existence. Is that pedestal undue? I'm not sure of that answer... probably both yes and no.
But whether or not the "larger than life" status that is given to these athletes is justified, the fact that, in this case, they are students first justifies their heroic example of courage and character. At Penn State, it's known as the "Grand Experiment," and since most of these young men will never play professional football, they play to uphold a tradition not only for themselves, but for something greater than each and every one of them.
If a definition of proportion means "balance," then these student-athletes have achieved that. They are an example for young ones everywhere to achieve excellence both inside and out of the classroom, and in all areas of life. |
