bright and cheerful colors - the image seems to lack a definition of the areas that are in focus and those that are not

the focus seems to be a bit off, I can see the use of DOF, but since your background it's dark it can be a bit hard to appreciate. Sometimes if you take your picture from slightly below it gives you a cleaner background. You almost got it, keep trying and you are going to do great ;)

Doesn't seem to be really in focus anywhere.

You've got the right idea, but the focal plane seems to be on the area just below the petals, leaving you with a lot of out of focus flower taking up all of the real estate unfortunately.

The background is just too dark to really see the DOF.

DOF is small on these types of shots making it more difficult to get the subject isolated. To me I would prefer to have the the details of the flower in focus with some of the petals maybe leaving focus. Maybe if the focal point was midway up the stamen of the flower and the broken stem to the left was not so well focused. Overall I believe you have the right idea - 6

This subject seems to be isolated more by contrast than DOF -- the bricks in the background are only slightly out of focus.
