he stood in front of an ugly hall light.

Neat image because overexposing leads to much grain. I used channel mixer to b/w to create first overexposure. then curves a couple times to overexpose it more. I cropped it and put on a frame. I sharpened it just a little. hue/sat to make it sepia.

I predict this will weird people out and get a low score. What do I get for a correct prediction? Chocolate?

Hmmm. I'm thinking I may prefer this with the grain over the Neat Image. Though I use it, I'm not a huge fan of that tool. I do like the chocolate tones. He's got a little too much of a sweetness to his expression to make it creepy or weirded out, to my eye. So no, no chocolate for you! Well, OK, maybe some later... if you're good.

*** Greetings from the Critique Club ***

First impressions: The high key works here.

Exposure: You did well to keep a good balance between lights and darks though I feel the left side of the face is a little too light or the other side a little too dark giving the eyes a bit of a spooky look rather than natural.

Impact: High key effect I think gives this image its impact making the subject really stand out.

Composition: I thinking this may work better with a more vertical composition, hence cropping more on the right and left. One hand appears to be cut off at the wrist though not really a problem since it's behind the boy and at the point of blending into the background.

Keep shooting.

Cheers!

Colette

I think he is palming something in that hand by the wall, and he may even have something behind his back. :) I like the shot and the processing.

Nice use of overexposure and wall. (Don't think a 5 score is low enough to win you the grade of chocolate you probably prefer).

I hope this does well for you. It's easily one of my top picks. I like the brown tones and especially the grain. Great pose/expression. A nine for you.

Cute shot. Sorry, that doesn't tell you much does it? The use of light and the effect of the overexposure - all very nicely answering to the challenge :)- are good but it doesn't make that extra shout to me. It's a nice portrait but I would think there's room for a fair bit of ambition in this challenge.
