milkweed (Asclepias)
monarch caterpillar (Danaus plexippus)

This milkweed is a very common plant in Wisconsin, often found in dairy herd pastures. The cows do not eat it, but rather, often leave cow pies around it.
It is also host to Monarch butterflies, who lay eggs on it which develop into caterpillars as seen.

Great catch! I've never seen one of these caterpillars in person.

So that's milkweed! I've heard of it because of Monarchs, but we don't have it here in Newfoundland. We sometimes get Monarchs that fly here from the mainland though. It's a pretty flower.
