Having suggested the challenge (and seen the resulting dismay in the forums) I felt I really had better enter the challenge myself!

I feel that the challenge can be interpreted two ways:

a) An image which in itself is serendipitous, either because the subject was a fortunate but accidental discovery or because the photographer found within the image something that he or she hadn't intended to capture when taking it.

b) An image representing the photographer's understanding of serendipity or relating their experience of it.

I went for the latter option and wanted to share a little slice of my history with you.

In 1992 I was a student at university, having a blast, as students are wont to do. But I decided I really ought to concentrate more on studying and less on partying and duly swore off men for a year. Yes, a whole year.

3 weeks later I was dating Pete. I broke my own pledge because I knew I'd found something very special. But a serious relationship was absolutely the last thing I was looking for and the last thing I had expected to find. I didn't intend or expect to settle down until my thirties, if then.

Regardless, it remains the best thing that has ever happened to me.

These rings are brand new - we collected them from a jeweller's on Saturday - and have been created to be exchanged in a wedding renewal ceremony in Namibia at the end of June this year. We lost one of the original rings so thought it would be nice to get new, matching bands for the ceremony.

They are each engraved with the words:

Pete & Kavita Always 3 Sept 94

:o)

(And yes I know I'm still going to get hammered with lots of low votes and comments telling me my entry is not a good challenge interpretation!)

Nice macro. Maybe not the first thing that pops into my mind when I think serendipity, but that's a hard thing to get a photograph of, so you get the benefit of the doubt. I like the lighting and the setup. The only thing that really (and I mean really) disturbs me is that the photograph appears to be neatimaged to death. By that I mean there isn't enough detail and texture left in the rings. This is particularly noticible in the sparkles on the right of the top ring, and almost everywhere in the shiney bands. If my vote were to count. it'd be about a 6

Simple yet effective. I like it. Good color choice for background color as well.

Excellent lighting. I like the vertical gradient and the shadow on the right. I'm not sure if it's just my monitor, but on the LHS these seems to be a secondary shadow that's sort of disconnected form the right itself? I'm also not keen on the halo at the bottom-left of the ring - it makes the finish look somewhat harsh. The same seems to be in the top right.

I like the centrality of the composition, although I think I may have moved it slightly further right? I know it's centred with the shadow, but I think because it's reasonably pale it looks very slightly unbalanced.

I think the position of the rings is excellent - you get a good feel of depth. I think the shot is very slightly soft though?

I can see where you're coming from with serendipity, and as it's a particularly difficult challenge I think it meets the challenge.

For me the shot has a lot going for it, but I think it lacks that extra 'sheen' that would make it a top quality shot.

i can see the link to the challenge topic quite easily..its not "pictured" but represented. I would have chosen a different coloured background. Something equally as simple and unobtrusive, but that gave more contrast to the subject. I like the placement of one ring in the other..suggests a connection between their owners.

There is a lack of sharpness overall (not major) that catches my attention, too. I like that we can read the inscription dates but the edges of the rings are not as sharp and clear as they could be--

overall: a challenge well met, and an elegant composition.

The starkness of the photo contrasts nicely with the rings. I like that they are in the center of the frame, which makes the m the all-consuming center of attention. Unfortunately there are a few distracting reflections and a few tiny little burned out areas. Takeing photos of anything metalic is extremely difficult without specialized equipment, but over all a very nice job.

Good capture, but the thing that caught my eye the most was the date on the ring. Is it Sept 9? That is my anniversary!

Beautiful lighting and colors. I like the transition from the lighter background to dark - but think the gradient should have been done in about 1/2 the space.

very hard to find a mistake here, just the reflection from the light on few spots on the rings. have you try using light diffuser? - 8
