never done a self portrait before (other than holding the camera out for a snap shot), so this was all very new to me. The focus i found difficult, as to press the shutter i had to be too near to be in focus; and my arms arent that long... So dad said to put it on auto, so i pressed the shutter and ran frantically round the garage (only place i could find with a big enough area)to return to a place where i might actualy be IN the photo and pose... tiring...
so if you have any advice for the shot, or even manage to find something good about it, I would love to hear it :]

I also had some trouble with the timer. It can get really annoying. You did a nice job on this shot though. Nice start.

TCGuru gave you some really good advice. It took me almost a whole month of the last SP side challenge to get the hang of this! What I do is to put a small sticker on my backdrop so I know where to position my head and a mark on the ground so I don't move around too much.

Great job. I am using a timer as well and it can be very frustrating. However, you got a good one here. Looking forward to more.

hi Louis, thanks for the comments. I've now included the shot details in with the picture, (F7.1 @ 100 iso). the lighting was from two strobes, one firing into a reflector and one through the brolly. The garage itself was dark so there was no natural light. : )

Thankyou awpollard too; I much prefer your crop- it looks more original, and generally is just so much better; I will bear it in mind for my next shots : )

Thanks for all the comments and advice, they have really helped me to think differently about aspects I had not considered before.

Great job, nice tones and lighting. Yup that 10 second timer thing can be hit or miss with sharpness (you got a good one here). I used to put an object, where I would be standing, for the camera to focus lock on; Hit the shutter release, run over and move the object and hope I was standing in the right place... your right lots of work but can be done.

This is a nice shot and turned out pretty darn cool; when shooting close in Self Port/portraits don't be afraid to do an even closer crop. I might have cropped this even tighter to emphasis the eyes/expression. Maybe something like



Left some negative space on the right but I removed the black area on the top so the viewer doesn't get drawn off and out of the top of the frame (IMO of course).

Try this: Go to where you will be standing, mark with red tape and auto focus on your tripod head, then go remount the camera on the tripod, change the focus to manual, set your timer, hit the shutter and run back to where you had your mark and pose :) hehe

OR, do the above and have someone else hit the shutter after you are posed :)

Try to shoot at a higher f-stop so there is more in focus and less chance of you missing your mark :)

your very pretty, and your hair is awesomely curly. focus is hard to get, but after a few more days you should start getting a feel for it and pull it off. i like the looking upwards too, very vogue.

I really like the color tones here, very classic. You have awesome curls too, which makes this pose work even better. The black background works well, but I do think the composition would be stronger if there were more negative space on the right of the image (right as I am looking at it- I think SJCarter and I are saying the same thing).

Lovely pose. Your hair is great and fits the pose. Getting that catchlight in your left eye helped in adding interest to this sp. It's my first attempt at this sp stuff too and i'm sure we'll both come out of this as better photographers.

I can't give any advice because I have not a clue about how to do these. I really like the color tone in this. Also your pose reminds me of someone who has just heard her favorite song on the radio and she's thinking about doing a little dance. :)

Great catchlights!! Really good lighting and interesting pose. You might try a slightly different crop (more off the left, to take you out of dead center), but that's nit-picking! :-) Good work.

Aww, you're pretty :D I really like the light with the black background - it simplifies the portrait that could have been messy with all the arms in there if there had been a clustered background too. Also, the looking up and out of the frame is quite good - I can't help but look to the top of the screen XD But it creates movement in the picture and makes it more than 'just a pretty face', you end up building a story around the picture.
