Obviously the city walls represent York's historic strength (since Roman times) in defending itself from unwelcome visitors.

Great color on the flora...
A very cool shot I thought would have found itself in the Top 20.

Thanks for the votes and comments.
some people mentioned the sky... this is what it looks like constantly in the UK. It's cloudy.
Perhaps I could have been a little less extreme with the contrast though...

I expected this shot to end up in the top 10 actually. I still like it a lot. Keep up the good "eye".

Too much contrast here. The large negative spaces are a distraction.

Wonderful use of the wide angle. Composition is fine. Perhaps the contrast is slightly too steep. Might also be a matter of taste. Very good. 9

Painful to the eyes, too high contrast

Great DOF and contrast of forms and textures.

Too much foreground flowers to focus on the wall. The wall looks more like a nice background to the flowers. But it is a nice image.

Great depth of field. The stems and leaves of the daffs seem a little to dark but otherwise an excellent shot.

Gorgeous colors and saturation! A tad oversharpened?

the bleached out background doesn't work for me and the daffs are a little too harsh - IMHO

A really nice image. Only critisism for me is that the sky is white which really looks un-natural

with such a strong subject on hand why did you make the flowers the focal point of the shot and not the wall?
04/15/2004 04:00:21 PM
The colors and contrast here make the image look almost surreal, like a storybook page or an album cover. It has an interesting style that displays a different kind of "crazier" strength.

I like the use of high contrast in this image...although I suspect that you may get some criticism for it...especially the sky..most voters seem to hate lack of detail.
Knowing the British weather..I`m aware that on some occasions, it is like this naturally..I think you have used it to your advantage to create interesting contrast between background and foreground.
Well done.

I think you changed the levels so much that it no longer appears real. I've yet to see a white sky like that especially when I'm looking at such bright flowers.

the yellow is a little oversaturated (and i like oversaturation) but it's a very neat photo - kind of peace and strength together.

Great use of DOF. The white sky is a real detractor - imagine the same image with a nice polarized blue sky .

Lovely floral photo with juxtaposition of stone walls in background. The white sky makes this photo look like a studio portrait rather than a real world photo. Also, the true strength of York is not in her walls but in her great cathedral faith as witnessed by the York Minster. The Minster at night would have been a finer subject for this challenge.

Pretty shot. I like the perspective. I only dislike the saturation in a few areas, looks heavy handed. Still I do like this. Good luck in the challenge. 7 from me.

IMO: the green in the lower left is too dark. I have a similar picture from several years ago - I love the scene of the yellow flowers in front of the walls.

Difficult lighting conditions, sky is overexposed and the ground is underexposed. If we could blend layers, exp. bracketing would do the trick. Maybe too much contrast done?
