by far the most crazy picture on DPC |
|

Very confrontational....Yeh! Like most crime scenes. Crime scenes that most DPC'ers haven't seen - so I can understand some of the disgust and the knee jerk low scores. I actually think you have captured this fairly well, with the harsh lighting and the vacant stare.
Well done chucky!!! |

CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIUQUE
by karmat
You have received a lot of feedback on this, as I thought you would. Also, now that I read that it is tomato sauce, it *looks* like tomato sauce. Perhaps if it were in black and white, or almost completley desaturated that might make it look less fake.
Yes, this picture is disturbing. Largely so. But, um, aren't most crime scenes, especially violent ones?
Do I want to look at this picture? Is it pretty? Is it emotionally appealing? Um, no. But, then violent crime isn't.
Is the "blood" excessive? Yes, but, for heaven's sake, she has just "committed" murder and suicide. I don't think that would be really neat and tidy, now would it?
It is a depressing, hopeless, stark, distressing, unreal, smacked in the face kind of picture. The challenge was crime scene, what were people expecting?
The surreal colors, the stark contrast, the gritty focus (all things I would normally comment on to "correct") add to the overall effect of the shot. You may not have scored well, but you didn't score well for all the right reasons.

It makes me feel good that this photo has struck so many different people in so many different ways. In some ways..this is even better than actually placing.
Also..it wasn't a homicide..it was a suicide. Originally the plan was to have it a homicide..that changed into a suicide because she was being beaten...(but I didn't use the pic with the bruises) so then it morphed into just a suicide.

Agreed, why do we so easily lose focus upon that?
This image isn't my cup of tea, but thanks for sharing.
And one more thought - what is so terrible with being offended by art? |

Very characteristic of a low budget horror flick, what's not to like?!? Two of my favorites are Terror Firmer & Dead Alive.
That's awesome how so many people were truly offended by your photo.

This photo certainly deserved a better score. I gave you a 6.
I think you could have gotten the same message without the knives, and the amount of blood is a little excessive. I also agree that the overall brightness of the image contradicts the sad/sombre mood of the photo. Other than that, I appreciate the work that went into this photo.
The fact that so many people were turned off by this photo proves, in my opinion, that it is an emotional photograph, and did what it was supposed to do. Good work. |

Nope. The 'blood' was tomatoe sauce that was Dodge and Burned in PP..the knives were stuck into her 'stomach' that was really a half of a watermelon. |

LOL. Yeah. I didn't have time to make 'fake blood'. I didn't even think of my idea until about two hours before submission time. I was eating a watermelon..when the idea STABBED me. :D |

Yeah. We thought about going for only one. But towards the end of the shoot...I started thinking of this crime more as a suicide and less as a murder. Two knives would make sense in that case...because she wants to make sure both of them die.
Anyways..didn't work. Back to the drawing board!
Thanks for the comment. |

Not to be rude, I really appreciate your comments...but crime scenes are generally OFFENSIVE. If they weren't...they wouldn't be CRIME SCENES. Dont believe me? Look up the real crime scene photos from the murders that inspired IN COLD BLOOD.
:)
But I can honestly see where you are coming from. Thanks for the tip!

I didn't vote on this challenge, but I clicked through all the images. I found this photo to be exceptionally brilliant and assumed it would get slammed for it.
The criticism regarding the harsh lighting is ridiculous, in my opinion. The lighting, the process, the setup are all a distinctive style and work very well together. It's a gutsy (no pun - ha) photo and very well executed. Do not be deterred by the stupid score. |

I would feel guilty if I do not give at least some idea on how to improve this. My first suggestion would be to be a bit more subttle with the amount of blood. IMO you could have achieved a more artistic approach in the same scene was lit with much less intensity. Mainly shadows (low keyish) with some indirect light in parts of the face and body could have worked better. |

For very personal reasons, this photo has a tremendous impact on me. Did she do it herself? Did someone else do it? I might be completely off base here, but it just feels like she decided to end her life and her baby's life. That to me is just a bit too much to handle. Like i said, personal reasons. Other than that, i feel that the lighting is a bit harsh.
FYI... I am not the person who doesnt like a picture cause it has blood, or because the subject matter is shocking. Its just a photo that's hard to see. Not sure what I will vote. Ill let you know as soon as I do.
Ok, Im back... Im going to give it a 6 for the technical part. 6 |
