This was taken back in the same corner of the park where I took the Lady in Waiting Canada Goose picture. It's along an "informal" trail not maintained by the park service, so it gets very muddy sometimes and is not as well travelled as the rest of the park. Consequently I often find interesting wildlife back here.

This heron was hunting and managed to catch a catfish while I was watching/shooting. I think he got annoyed at having company because he took off with his prize (you can just see it shining a bit in his beak) and went behind the trees and bushes on the other side of the water, out of sight.

PP - converted from RAW, cropped, levels, increased saturation, dodged/burnt heron, added an irregular vignette around the heron, added border, resized, sharpened.

I always have the worst time trying to get photos of herons! They are very timid whenever I have my camera with me but seemingly unconcerned with my presence whenever I'm decked out in my waiters and fishing! Nice shot with the wings spread, great composition.

Awesome capture, I am going to have to go back to my park and wait for the heron there to fly

What a lovely nature shot. The heron looks great with the dark background, and I also like that you left a lot of foreground in the image to give it depth and show the environment. Good processing helped too.

Beautiful flight shot with that clear feather detail. The fish makes it even better. I love the wild mood of the scene -- it feels like deep wilderness.

Now that is a stunning shot Mary! There's so much movement captured in the heron, the wind flipping his wings up, the catfish wiggling... just awesome. The surroundings look so serene!
