on the side of the road, heading down to Rosebud.

they are such ugly yet amazing animals. The fur on a number of them looked rather mangy. They seem either rather timid and run away, or very disinterested and cool like this big guy.
I am at the Lakota Sioux reservation in Rosebud S Dakota... the Sioux were hunters and relied on buffalo for food, clothes, shelter, and other things. Because they followed the roaming buffalo, the Sioux lived in tipis which could be packed up and moved quickly. A tipi was a tent made of tall wooden poles and covered with tough buffalo hides. The Sioux ate mostly buffalo -- boiled, broiled, dried, and sometimes raw. After a buffalo hunt, the Sioux ate fresh buffalo. In the winter, when buffalo were hard to hunt, the Sioux ate dried buffalo meat, called pemmican. A buffalo hunt was very serious and carefully planned. Scouts would find the buffalo, and the tribe would move as close to the buffalo herd as possible. On the day of the hunt, hunters would mount their horses, the chief would give a signal, and the men would charge. The buffalo ran fast, and the hunters shot only three arrows before the stop-shooting signal was given. The Sioux only killed as many buffalo as the tribe could use. The women followed the hunters with their pack horses. The men and women would skin the buffalo, cut up the meat, and load it on the horses. Then they all rode back to the camp for fun and feasting.

My first thought about this in the thumbnail view was "postage stamp" for some reason. It's n excellent portrait of a fine animal. The grass in the foreground contrasted with the dark fur is very good.

I heard they were very egotistical animals. That's how they got such big heads. :P
This is really good. An awesome image of a magnificent beast at rest. Well done.

My parents took me out west as a kid, and I'll never forget first seeing one of these giants. I'll also never forget the man who set his child on one to get a picture. Nothing happend, but can you say MAJOR lack of good judgement!!

Very nice photo! Thanks for sharing.
