I gave you a 7 on this but I would like to say something about the image and your POV on why it got barely a 5. Why would a picture of a fireman be taken out of focus? I mean this is a portrait of a guy doing his job, why would this picture be better out of focus? The answer is it wouldn't and this is reflected in your score. I understand the use of soft focus in photography but it also has a limited use. Not every image will look good because you've added a touch of creativity to it by not focusing on the subject. It's not an automatic result. He's also looking right into the lens, at us. So why would someone look at me that way? Am I oof too? eheh

Soft focus is a great way to render a soft scene like a couple walking through a field of really tall grass. Or a girl running in a garden filled with flowers. It has many uses but not in an environmental portrait where you want detail to show up clear and crisp.jmo

In response to your post in the forums:

During voting I liked this photo and gave it a 6. The colors are rich and to me, the soft focus adds to the ambiance. It conveys that there was an actual scene unfolding.

That said, I didn't check to see how long you've been on DPC, but know that anything out of focus when it's not the challenge topic is regularly unforgiven by the majority of the voters. Regardless of how great it looks.

A dilemma I face all the time is - do I shoot and submit what is 'me' and what I like, or do I shoot what I know will do well? In any case, good luck with future submissions.

An overall soft water color like quality is rather attractive. I think a good study of the fireman.

I like the sense of movement on the background. the subject looks slightly out of focus to me...a bit sharper would have grabbed me more.

A sharper image here would have really helped this a lot.
I do like the depth of field and the nature of the portrait.

So close!!! This is the only firemen so far in this challenge, and you got a handsome one to boot! But you missed the focus by a hair, still, a great portrait.
