Photographer’s Notes
State Capitol building, Olympia, Washington (USA). I shot this after driving 80 miles (each way) on a day replete with low clouds, driving rain, and multiple injury accidents (not involving me, thankfully) along the freeway which delayed my progress. It’s not the greatest length I’ve gone to for a photo, but it’s up there.
To put things in perspective, the chandelier is the size of a Volkswagen Beetle.
After nearly 4 months with my new D3, I feel like I’ve finally bonded with it. I feel like this image does a pretty good job showing off the low light performance of the camera. Without ISO 3200 – I would never have been able to capture this in natural light. Pushing my old D200 that far would have been a noise disaster. I did apply slight noise reduction here, but it took very little.
Post Processing
There was a lot of editing but the change from original to as-edited was subtle. It was nearly perfect out of the camera.
• Convert from Raw (PS CS3)
• Reduce Noise (Neat Image)
• Deemphasize Blues (Hue/Saturation Layer)
• Deemphasize Yellows (Hue/Saturation Layer)
• Lighten (Curves Layer)
• Increase Contrast (Curves Layer)
• A Bit More Brightening and Contrast (Brightness/Contrast Layer)
• Clone Two Distracting Windows (Clone Tool)
• Soften an Overly Bright Area (Color Layer)
• Resize (Bicubic Sharper)
• Sharpen (USM)
• Border (Select & Stroke)
• Save for Web
Resizing and Save for Web took file size from 156 MB to 200 KB!
