when the 'harsh environments II' challenge came out the first thing i thought of was a dragonfly eating a fly or bug ..

i went out four days in a row and waited around for about an hour each time .. i got this one on the fourth day & even then it was like a miracle, because the last time i saw a dragonfly eating a fly was in january when i was able to photograph one for the Free Study 2008-01..

i hope the voters see this as meeting the challenge .. in my mind it definitely does .. it's a very harsh environment when you end up getting eaten ..

for ppl who dont know the anatomy of dragonflies ..
this one has it's mouth wide open ..
also, as they eat a fly, i'm not sure exactly how, but gradually the 'meal' loses shape and becomes like a black gooey mass .. maybe the dragonfly's juices break it down .. this is all visible before being swallowed .. its extremely gross and very interesting .. !!

after voting ..
talk about an idiot ..
i noticed something i wanted to change on this when it was 7 minutes away from voting .. in my hurry i worked on the wrong process ..
this is wot should have gone in the challenge ..

its not that obvious but the stick is a natural colour rather than the blue ..

Hey beautiful I just knew that this was you and your trained dragonfly again.

Great work as usual, the PP is fantastic and you have quite a knack for catching them with food in their mouths.

All the best.

MAX!

im really surprised this didnt get more comments, but since i didnt vote in this challenge i guess i have to share the blame! love the shot buddy, the only thing that "bugs" me (haha i make myself laugh) is the dark area in the upper third which i am sure was unavoidable being a macro and all

Very nice macro, fits the challenge well but on the downside I will subtract 1 for not having the eye of the dragonfly as sharp as possible. Golden rule of macro's concentrate on the eye.8

good subject but parts are OOF probably due to subject movement
