Maisie, I agree with Alice - technically this is a very good photo, but the subject was not suitable for this challenge. Keep at it.

Maisie, you have a good imagination which will serve you well in your photography. When you have more skills, which come with lots of practice, you may well be among the winners. Please keep trying.

 Comments Made During the Challenge

ok not the best
03/30/2004 11:41:06 AM
A classic still life but kinda washed out - either a shofter focus or a sharp focus with minimal depth of filed would have made this more applealing
03/30/2004 10:11:03 AM
I agree, but unfortunately photo is too soft, and the rules specifically said don't use real oranges
03/29/2004 10:32:57 PM
Huh, I seem to have read this somewhere. "without photographing the fruit called an "orange".
03/29/2004 04:49:02 PM
Cute typo in your title! Not sure why you took this though - what did you want to achieve?
03/29/2004 12:05:46 PM
I bet you have lots of comments about this!! Dont think it will get a brown ribbon but it should go close. :-)
03/28/2004 07:45:47 PM
I thought use of the actual fruit was prohibited. Nice shot anyway!
03/28/2004 03:46:09 PM
Not a bad shot but unfortunately doesn't meet the challenge..
03/28/2004 04:15:55 AM
ulgy?
03/27/2004 05:36:09 PM
What's with the purple light? This photo is very dark.
03/27/2004 04:56:37 PM
You have probably already gotten this comment but the challenge did say “without photographing an orange”
03/26/2004 05:24:42 PM
They said no oranges.
03/26/2004 04:46:42 PM
I guess you can`t read either 5
03/26/2004 01:24:18 PM
I don't mean to be rude, but I thought oranges are explicitly stated in the rules for this challenge as an exclusion. Having said that, the luminosity of the oranges is quite interesting. The triangular arrangement is very harmonious. The folds of the background add some visual interest. There are however, white specks near the edge on the left, although small, somehow, are distracting. Still, it's a good effort for the challenge.

they aren't ugly but the challenge specifically barred photos of oranges!
03/26/2004 08:24:00 AM
I thought taking photos of the fruit "orange" was against the brief?
03/26/2004 08:16:51 AM
I understood the challenge to say that "oranges" were not allowed
03/26/2004 05:30:43 AM
didn't the rules say no oranges or orange-like fruit?
03/26/2004 01:59:43 AM
Oranges? I thought we were supposed to take a shot with orange in it... not oranges :s My 2 cents: Due to lack of lighting, the colors of this shot look too dull IMO. Not the best choice of background either. White would've looked better. Also, the ambient light (sort of violet) on the oranges doesn't go too well. A little too much of NeatImage used too i think. Hope this helped. Good luck
03/25/2004 11:38:40 PM
I like the use of soft focus. However: those are ORANGES, the background is distracting with the folds, the reflections on them are unattractive, as are the oranges themselves. Try saturating it more to bring out the colors. Score: 3
03/25/2004 11:36:43 AM
Nice as a still life but aren't those oranges? Just not sure it fits the challenge.
03/25/2004 07:52:07 AM
Yeah they are ugly. The composition is so-so; 'filling the frame' is one way to make it more interesting maybe. You have colour cast in the shot which can be taken out using Levels in Photoshop(or other editting software). Softer/diffuse/indirect light would have caused less glare on your subject. Oh yeah, one other thing.....your subject was specifically mentioned in challenge outline has one of the items not to shoot. Sorry. 1
03/24/2004 11:08:55 PM
so you weren't supposed to actually use oranges in the shot. You probably gots 1000 comments just like this too. Sorry, 1
03/24/2004 05:26:06 PM
Yes, and the light/color and background are not complimentary. You'll need to be a bit more creative to score higher on DPC.
03/24/2004 04:17:09 PM
You've lit this perfectly. They're a little too close to the background though therefore not blurring the background enough. They might have had more impact with a white background.

Can't you read, the details said no pictures of the actual fruit!
03/24/2004 02:47:58 PM
I'm sure I am not the first to say... "See how creative you can be in composing an interesting shot where orange is the primary color without photographing the fruit called an "orange" (or any of its similar varieties, like tangerines.)"
03/24/2004 01:24:39 PM
Specifically statedin challenge rules - NO orange fruit or related fruit pics. Sorry, but this has to get a 1 for that flagrant rule violation.
03/24/2004 01:11:17 PM
oranges eh?
03/24/2004 01:00:23 PM
I don't think you were suppose to take a photo of an actual orange, thus, it doesnt really meet the challenge.
03/24/2004 12:30:17 PM
Decent attempt at a still life, but the lighting is a little harsh and too much Neat Image was applied. Overall focus is too soft for my taste but that might have been your intention. The positioning of your main subject can be debated because it doesn't meet the ROT and most still life images seem to be centered, but it seems OK to me. Photography rules are only guidlines and each image is unique.

I'll bet the "fails to meet the challenge" crowd is killing you on this one. :) Pay no attention to that.

My thoughts on this photograph…bad shot, bad spelling, and bad comprehension of the challenge parameters.
03/24/2004 09:05:04 AM
Oh, you're going to get hammered by the commenters! Sorry you didn't read the challenge rules.

The challenge said no oranges!
03/24/2004 12:35:08 AM
Looks like grapefruit so, technically, it might meet the challenge, but not in spirit.
03/24/2004 12:23:43 AM
We weren't supposed to use oranges - are these grapefruits? :)
03/24/2004 12:08:39 AM
should have read the challenge details.....NO ORANGES
