this was taken in natural light - although the sun was behind clouds, thus casting a light shadow. a previous attempt in full sun produced a prominent shadow. i had tried a few different versions of this, including inverting the colors - which i really liked (looked like the moon surface on the jelly bean), but was suggested to enter this one instead!

photo was taken cos it was the only jelly belly left - no one likes black jelly beans...

Greetings from the Critique Club

First Impression

Smile. :-) Simplicity.

Looking Deeper

This photo met the challenge theme without question IMO. That's a feat in itself based on all the banter around what the challenge meant to different people.

It's very simple, and to the point. The title, in combination, made me smile as I could visualize this poor leftover jelly bean getting left behind.

The simplicity gives the photo a feeling of a stock photo, especially with the white background. Kind of static and impersonal. I think this made the image an easy 'hit the 5' and move on target during the challenge. Nothing to hold the viewer's interest for very long.

From a technical standpoint I don't see anything really out of place. The focus is right on, lighting seems appropriate...if it was mine I'd have been tempted to clean up the few specks on the lower front of the jelly bean. Small item, but some may have seen it as a lack of attention to detail.

The new rules allow for image size up to 720px for advanced challenges now. You only used 640...may have gotten a little more impact from the extra sizing.

Had I been at your party, this jelly bean wouldn't have survived; black is my favorite! :-D
