Thanks to all those who commented. I didn't have time to leave comments before posting this shot, but several people asked how it was done. Pretty simple really- I taped 1/4" strips of fluorescent paper to two round cake racks and hung the birds from the rack with black thread. I positioned two blacklights to illuminate the inside and outside to make sort of a 3D optical illusion with the lighting. The fluorescent glow caused a purple fringing effect with the camera and I was waiting for someone to say the birds were out of focus (even though the foreground and background obviously are)- Jonwam, you win.

Wow, that's vivid! Interesting illusion with the stripes, the purple 'creatures(?)' seem a little blurry, but maybe that's my eyes reaction to such strong colors. Certainly the most original I've seen so far.

The colors here put this above many others. Overall it seems in between ordinary and surreal, almost avant-garde but not quite there.

Very artistic. I used to make these as I sat and chatted to folks over drinks - would be lots of them left lying around in bars and peoples' houses. Then decided I was it was too BladeRunner ish and stopped! This is nice!

Excellent picture! Perhaps could've used the lighting to highlight the forward 'bars' vs. the ones to the back for a more literal picture; though the weird 2D/3D effect going on might have been the intent!
