I would have gave this a 10 if it was not for the dual tone background.
My eye kept going to the light BG instead of on the nose and darker eye ,where it should have gone ! I would like to see if you re edit it with a more even BG:)

It's a good, technically solid, doggie portrait. I gave it a 6. Nice focus, lighting, detail in the fur. Good job getting detail in both the white and black, and good catchlights in the eyes. The only "technical" problem I see is with the cheesy background. I have no idea why anyone would give this less than a 5.

Now, as to what could make this really stand out...I think what's missing is the lack of connection with the viewer. If you look at the top 10 in this challenge, there is a wide variety of poses, looks, etc, but the one thing they have in common is that every animal is looking directly at the camera, bringing the viewer into the shot. Even the chicken.

The other thing that might bring it over the top (or make it tank) is some sort of hook to grab the viewer's attention. You don't have to dress the dog in a party hat (ahem), but the top shots all stand out for one reason or another, either because they're cute, unusual, emotional, or whatever. Pepper's shot doesn't have that kind of kick to it.

I see good detail in both the black and the white fur, and the lighting is good, with good catchlights to spark the eyes (though some may object to two catchlights). A very good, classic portrait. As with my own, however, it is somewhat static, and with the eyes turned away from the camera, doesn't fully engage the viewer. I found that the shots I responded to most in the challenge had direct eye contact - the animal engaging the viewer. In this shot, you may have wanted just a bit more room on the left of the frame, and the optimum would have been a more direct look.

I did not vote in this challenge but I would have given this a 6. It's got nice detail though I find the background/backdrop distracting and it immediately draws my eye away from the dog. The next thing that I notice is that the dog is looking away from the camera off to the side. I feel a more personal reaction to the photos where you can actualy look into the dogs/animals eye, that is just a matter of taste for me. The lighting seems nice and well focused and he is a cute dog. hope this helps and this is just my opinion, it defintly didn't deserve a 3 or 4, at least imo.

Nice sharpness and good DOF. I like the expression and the angles you chose. I didn't vote during this challenge mainly because I knew there would be a lot of snapshots of the family pet. This one does have a nice polished look and feel to it.

Great eyes! This image is a good example of the importance of monitor calibration ... which I have not done professionally ... yet. I think you've done a fine job photographing Pepper, for me however, the white fur on the neck seems a bit blown out but if I tip my monitor I can see the detail, unfortunately then the black facial fur loses detail. I wonder if other viewers notice this. Good luck with a nice portrait. 7
