The dead space on the right doesn't seem to add anything to the image. A vertical shot cropped at the point where light meets dark may have more impact.

Not a bad idea. I can tell that you paid attention to the rule of thirds. The darkest part of the image is dark enough to give th appearance of poor framing. Lighten it up just enough to show that it is actually an intentional part of the photo.
