We went today to the Magical Ice Carving Festival in St. Joseph, Michigan. It's amazing what they can do with ice. What I really liked was that there were quite a few people and many taking pictures. I used this as an opportunity to try some candid shots, something a little out of my comfort zone.

While the girls were in a building getting free popcorn, I stood in the doorway and got about half a dozen shots. I saw this guy carrying his (grand?) daughter about 25 feet away and knew this was the shot to get. I quickly pre-focused where I thought they would be. I miscalculated their trajectory and had to refocus at the last second. This was my only shot and is a bit blurry, taken at F/2.8.

Even at that, I really like this. This guy was walking with a purpose and seemed really focused. The girl was enjoying the ride. I love the contrast between their expressions. He's showing that life's beat him up a bit; it hasn't quite done that to her yet.

Edit: That's a genuine Five and Dime in the background! But they added a $ to the end of it - gotta love inflation.

Fantastic candid capture. The little girl is so cute and seems to be really enjoying her ride. It seems the gentleman is enjoying giving the ride just as much. I like the overall softness of the picture and the tight crop. It really draws the eye inward to the expressions on the faces.

It is 1 in the morning where you live, go to sleep already!

Love the shot of the little girl on her daddy's shoulders. Everyone is looking a different direction, where is the real action? Love it!

Why did you mention popcorn, now I have to make some and eat it in honor of this shot. Go to bed before you cause more trouble! lol, lol, lol!!!!!!!!!
