Interesting break in the lines of the steps here with the person and dog, with them adding to the vertical feeling that flows from the building (or whatever that is). The conversion works well given your aims. I might have liked to have seen a bit more texture to the dog to match the person, or a bit less as more of a contrast . . . (but maybe not, too). |

I like how all the lines lead to them. Its also interesting how the sand bleeds into the water and you have too look close to see the where it changes. |

I think this would not have done well in Old Way because the background is what catches my attention first and kind of overwhelms the two subjects. (Unless you were planning on doing some cropping.)
The black and white, for me, does a great job of enhancing that winter mood, as the beach looks colder and whiter. I love how the speckled dog matches the speckled beach - pretty cool. |

Nice lines, the grain gives this a special atmosphere. Perhaps a little busy here, all the lines of the building and the stairs, the beach and the two subjects. |

The picture certainly gives off a cold and barren feel. The dog and owner really seem to be enjoying their time together even if the weather wasn't so cooperative. |

How unfortunate that you pulled it because you felt that a grainy B&W wouldn't do well.
I really like the shot and the grain really gives it a nostalgic look. Thanks for letting us enjoy it!

Wise choise the grain on the image. The placement of the subject is excellent and very playfull. |

I like the elements of the image and the composition. For my taste, the grain in conjunction with the high contrast is a little much and seems to obscure more than support the theme of the photo. Thanks for posting the color version, too - for comparison. |

The grain works really well here. Nice leading lines of the beach leading me right to the subjects. Sounds like you enjoyed yourself too and captured a wonderful candid. |

I love the story. And I love the photo. I love the grain and the whole feel of the photo. To me, the black and white is much more dramatic and appealing -- and believe it or not -- I'm one of the few minority that still generally prefers color in photos. I'm trying to build up my black and white skills and portfolio, so that's why I'm doing this side challenge, but normally I still think color adds richness and tones that you can't get in a black and white. But in this case. . .the black and white is exactly what you want as far as mood and feel.
Awesome!

Dilution of subject is what I learn here. A background context can dilute the subject but still be used to produce an effect, in this case it includes not only the location but says something about the lens passing by the event. In every picture there is something to learn, or at least I try to remove myself from the easy option of saying "I like" "I don't like." |

Interesting image - maybe a little too much foreground happening, but I like the connection between the two. |
