Decided to start this weekly challenge with a weekly activity, watching my kids hockey games (indoor at this moment, my son played today, he's not on this photo). The lights in this hall were terrible, probably one of the reasons they're going to demolish this hall very soon.

I just liked the situation here (Note: translation of the little signs: ladies dressing room)

Not much editing: rotation, cropped, auto convert to B&W, a little level adjustment, resized and sharpened.

This is almost like two separate shots for me; what is the referee doing? Who is he pointing to and why? It's almost as if he was warped there from somewhere else, caught in the middle of calling a foul in a game no longer being played. I love it.

Really clean shot (iso 1600!!!); good triangle composition of players and ref; good contrapuntal of players vs ref; and well, the ladies' room jumps it up a notch. All the tones in your conversion (auto!) work. T

Great action shot and even though the lighting was poor this picture turned out nicely.

Nice details...I still remember your shot with your kids on the fields next to each other, one of my favorites from the last B&W challenge. You always have nice tones on your conversions, nicely done.

the ref makes the shot - stoic, impartial, not looking at the players?!!!

heh - when i have to watch a hockey game, it's played on ice and in a flippin cold arena! I think I'd much rather watch this.

I may have to get a Canon one day. The low noise level at ISO 1600 is amazing. Mine would be horrible. A lot of components have great clarity in this and I think it's fun that we can see the ball(?) too. Great action capture.

Nice action shot, would be nice if you got them facing the camera. Of course, I know sometimes that just doesn't happen... Really nice job on the B&W conversion.

So often this type of 'action' shot can be left flat however the ref's stance and just a little movement in the players left leg helps this to tell a story. At first I thought the ladies room was messing up the picture but on reflection it helps the image imho.

I love the referee's posture in this; it's a good capture of an action shot, and having the ladies dressing room & the ref there make it great. I like the conversion to B&W - the contrasts seem perfect.

What? You mean this isn't the typical day in the average home?

Dad: "Do it because I said so! Go! Up to your rooms...Now!"

Tweens: "Hol' up! Hol' up! Hol' up! I think Dad's talking to us! What's you say, Dad?"

It would be funny if it wasn't so close to the truth. :(

The photo, however, is great! I agree,...the moment and expressions are priceless. :)

I love the look on the ref! I also love that they're completely ignoring him. Very fun shot!

A moment in time, that choice which depends on a physical reflex, the lens on the camera, and pre-determined settings. Fundamentals which can reveal an image but which have many variable results. These are the things I think of when viewing your photo.

Hey if it works. Our gym is also pretty dark. Can't take a good picture in there to make me happy. This is actually pretty good. Great socks.. hehee.. I wonder how that kid can see past all that hair. I really like the ref's stance.

Ooooooh, I am looking so forward to seeing more of your photos from your weekly activities. Hockey offers so many awesome action photos. We even have a minor league hockey team here in San Antonio, "The San Antonio Rampage", and I LOVE going to the games whenever we can. But, being Texas and all, we wouldn't even think of having anything hockey related for the kids. I hope some day that changes, but for now, I'll just vicariously enjoy your kids' games :)

Nice moment you captured here :)

Nice action photo, however the ref is a study by himself... Excellent range of tones.
