Wonderful shot John, it should have scored much higher. Excellent work.

Thanks for the many positive comments I was given on my entry. The photo was shot on a very gloomy day at the Amsterdam Zoo. Lighting conditions were bad and working with a long telephoto lens required high shutter speeds to avoid camera-shake. Furthermore, when seeing the Oryx’s in this pose I had to close the aperture a lot to acquire the appropriate depth of field and hence I had to push up the ISO level to 800. Photographing against the sky I had to adjust the values with one stop to still be able to get some detail in the animals. This caused the sky to become washed out. Believe me, I would have enjoyed taking this picture on a sunny day in Africa but this had to do. The photo took some cropping and then some adjustment of the levels. I realize now that I also could have played around a bit with sharpening.

this was one of my favorite shots of the challenge I would love it if you told us where how shot it, how did you get white background?

Really a nice picture full of expectation - you really wonder, what are they looking at and TALKING about!

Cute! I especially like that they seem to be talking to each other about whatever's out of our view. The lack of background is the only thing that's distracting. It's just a little unsettling not to see something... perhaps that was your point. 9.

Bumping this from an 8 to a 9... I really, really like this shot. It's kind of abstract with the way that it's cropped, the way they all face the same way, and the curves of their horns. It may just be because of the resizing, but it looks to me like the focus was on the middle gazelle (?) because the two to either side appear a bit softer - just wish they were equally in focus.

Super job!

I like it. Pretty funny. Too bad the sky wasn't blue. That would have complemented the animal well.... you don't control the weather..... so I give it an 8. (you're title made the pic in large part.)

I like this. The two open mouthed ...err "deer thingys" look like they are astonished with whats going on. Perhaps their pal has just been munched by a lion. This exactly meets the challenge, I want to know.....lovely composition too.

Interesting colors and composition. Too bad about the basic editing rules. I want to do something to the background, but don't know what.

I like the composition here and absolutely perfect for the challenge.
There seems to be a little loss of detail in the darker areas..which is probably because of the camera exposing for the light background but overall.. very good.

Does make you wonder what they are looking at in aghast. Captures the theme, but DOF is troublesome.

This isn't the photo that best incites curiosity about the things beyond the frame. But it's still a very, very good photo, in terms of composition. If anything, curiosity is drawn into the frame because of the elegance of it.

focus is a bit off, and I just dont feel as if this photo is real.

Hehe. Caption does make the photo, but certainly an expressive image nonetheless. Very funny! Unfortunate artifacting on the antlers and I'm overwhelmed by the negative space and the contrast it creates. I would have appreciated further physical context, maybe a colorful sky and landscape. Maybe even less of a crop if possible. Love the open mouths!

Nice expressions, good composition, though I'm not sure if I'd prefer the background as is or with clouds. -8-

Oryx in awe. Good expressions. Looks like it may be at max telephoto. Edges against the sky look a little strange.

With a bit more of definition (or light? or contrast?) it could certainly win a ribbon!! The subject, the expression and the composition are just excellent to me. Nice shot, that fits the challenge so well!!! 8

I wish the background wasn't so blown out, but I like the shot anyway.

Excellent idea. I don't think the white border is necessary, but the image more than makes up for it. Nice use of negative space. 8.
