The first thing I thought when I saw this scene is the similarity in shapes of the tombstones and the corporate buildings. Of course, that drew tons of sayings and comparisons in my head (You know, things like, you cant take it with you etc)

Re did the photo here .

Thanks for the great comments/suggestions

Hope people like it.

Ill try and rework the contrast settings, it was too bright of a day unfortunately when i took this

As is, I like this a lot; perhaps those below were trying all their lives to get into the light, into those buildings that live in the sky, where the sun always shines. The juxtaposition here is brilliant.

I'm trying to get caught up on some black and white comments so I'm just now seeing this one Kolasi...it is wonderful! It is like two different photos stitched together being related back to one another by feeling rather than a physical connection. I like this version better than the redo, but both are very strong!

I gulped a bit when I first glanced at this - made me think of the WTC towers. Its a powerful image. I like the clear division/wall between the cemetary and the world behind. Good work.

the conflict between the living and the dead - a great story in a single image - how the living live in buildings so similar to the headstones they make for the dead

Your photo does tell a story. I agree with comments already made about the sky. Your re-do is already looking 100% better. Well done!

i really like the composition of this shot. I feel that, as you stated, teh sky is a bit bright. The re-edit is nice to bring soem contrast back in to the building. I would love to see this on a day with some clouds in the sky.

Interesting parallels there in the tombstones and corporate buildings. I like the redo a bit better as the buildings tend to stand out more. It adds some nice contrast to the background.

I think this tells a story - something about how the outside world continues on but the textures and tones within the cemetary walls are much more beautiful.

Personally, I love the bottom half of the image from the top of the fence down - I'd work on the sky and the lightness of the buildings.

Thanks for sharing!

Pretty much what mad_brewer said. Tones as they are reinforce our reflections.

I like the comparison you've made. You have nice detail and tones on the bottom. What you could do with this is replace the sky with a more interesting one, I actually have a library of just skies just for occasions like this. Especially when it's really blown, it's easy to select and delete.

I love the line and similarities that you saw, and we have the same lens :)
A little tip to get some detail back in the building at least is to make a curve layer adjustment and just press okay. Then set it to multiply and open the curve again and play with the tones in the top. You can then mask out the bottom and get some dark tones in the building.
With that said I like it how it is. :)

Can't add much to the other comments. Perhaps you should add more contrast. Dark from the bottom to light in the sky.

The use of juxtaposition is what I learned from your photo. Coincidence in life is more common than we understand.

Interesting perspective.. an idea would also be to darken the upper half if the image to give it a more grave mood.

I actually love cemeteries. There is something so sacred in them, and as I walk around, I can somehow feel all the stories and love surrounding each life there. I love the poignant contrast of the cemetery in this photo. . .life having passed into eternity. . .and the huge corporate buildings reminding us that life goes on.

Excellent photography!

edit: oooops. . .can't type today.

This is incredible. I haven't seen a big city cemetery.

I think the previous commenters have covered everything. As mad_brewer mentioned the tilt is a bit off putting but easily corrected and am sure you'll revisit often - cool find with many more stories to tell.

On a side note I live in the UK and all towns/cities have graveyards in them so to me its not unusual (though non look as organised as this one)

Hey Panos - glad to see you in this side challenge. I Love the contrast of places people live vs. places of people not living (lol). I'm fascinated by the fact that a graveyard is right in the city - of course not that there's that many choices in Japan. I think I'd like to see some greater contrast to make it darker and enhance the somber mood.

Really cool image - very evocative. If I have one suggestion, I would have preferred to have changed the angle a little bit by shifting your vantage point to the left. That way you wouldn't have so much negative space in the upper left and the towers could loom over the center of the frame a bit more. Still, I think this image says a lot - well done!

Nice strong lines that show the complete life-cycle of life (upper-half) to death (lower-half.) Nice hyper-focal distance! (The brightness of the day helped your hyper-focal distance by closing down the iris to a larger F-Stop number. That has always been weird to me F/22=smallest opening, and F/2-massive opening! Go figure!) :)

I like it. I get the feel that the cemetery looks like it has been crowded into the city. Every tomstone seems to close with so little room. Creates a neat "city" effect.

Getting the lighting right on bright sunny days outdoors is always tricky. Graduated filters work well for me. I do like the similarity in shape between the tombstones and the buildings in the background.

Nice imagery and it is too bad about the time of day - it just creates that harsh sunlight in the top part of the image.

Interesting effect you have going on here - the top is mostly high key and bottom mostly low key. It suggests a heaven/hell type of thing, and the similar shapes just makes the mind work a bit more. Just a suggestion... watch the horizon, it appears to be tilted down on the right.

A good range of tones and perfectly suited to black and white. The dead sleep as the city goes on beyond the walls. It seems so crowded there, yet peaceful.

i like the idea, but a bit of contrast and maybe a DOF putting the buildings out of focus would have been nice, cool idea capturing a grave yard in the city
