i have put the golfer in this thread what the heck is time lapse because many ppl are misunderstanding the time lapse challenge rules ..
i actually entered the golfer in the time lapse challenge .. i asked for a validation from the site council just in case i got it wrong .. they said it didnt satisfy the challenge .. so i unsubmitted it .. i disagree with their opinion in this case .. the golfer is time lapse photography as i understand it ..
it's a combination of three photographs taken when tim walked towards the tee with the stick held in that way to line up his shot, bending down to pick a piece of grass to test the wind and then just after he hit the ball .. he'd already put the ball on the tee before these photographs were taken .. it was totally unposed and the actions are in sequence, one after the other, and not shot at different times .. they were playing golf and i was taking photographs .. i think they forgot i was there .. i was lying on the ground ..
i would'v thought that if you showed an object(s) moving thru the frame with multiple exposures then it would satisfy the challenge .. (whether its a natural phenomena, like the moon moving thru the heavens for example, or a person moving thru a scene .. )
anyway, this is the reply i got from pam Frisca..
i'm putting this in here just in case other ppl make the same mistake i did .. the comparison between my golfer and 'all my brothers' is invalid in this case because both images are the result of totally different photography/processing ..
Sorry, Roz! Let me try to explain more clearly: Time lapse is a very narrow allowance for things like astrophotography, and natural, sequential movements. To allow what you propose, would also open the doors to things like kiwiness' "all my brothers" or something like that. We mean to allow flowing natural movement, not cherry-picked images arranged to look like a natural sequence. Even if the golfer did move in all the ways you show, what you have depicted is no different from taking several shots of a bird sitting on various branches at the bird feeder (not legal under the time lapse rules). I hope that makes things clearer for you.
Pam
this is 'all my brothers' by gary kiwiness that pam mentioned ..
since all the talk in what the heck is time lapse? .. there's the other thread site updates and advanced editing that talks more about the difficulty of coming to some agreement in this new rule-set .. and lets face it, its a very difficult rule to understand, come to an agreement on and then apply .. good luck to the sc on this one .. !!
they have my full support .. :)
Hi Roz
beautiful image!!..I would have thought this fits into the description of a natural action sequence too.
I have a doubt:
If the ball was put on the ground in the position shown in capture # 2, how did you manage to show the player finishing his actual swing (shown in capture #3) in a diferent position (a few more feet away from the camera)?
I really like this image. Colors & composition are excellent!
All the confusion of what is & is not time lapse is the exact reason of why I didn't enter, I had tried to think of a couple things but wasn't sure what would be legal.
As usual, Roz, you accepted with grace a decision that was to say the least, "debatable." This is not a cherry picking set of images but one fluid motion. (Obvious, perhaps, because the sky would have changed slightly if there had been 'cherry picking'.)
Need I say this is one heck of an image? Nice one, Roz. Now where's a time lapse of that cute dog of yours.
To be honest I agree with you and I think Frisca just thought the three images were part of the swing movement and not as you said the preparation of the shot. It we were talking about the swing then I would agree with SC since then the three images must be overlapping (since the body is anchored to the same spot), however the way you explained it the shot is telling a different story Tim walking to the spot, testing the wind and then swinging, three separate phases of the same event.
Wow this is a fantastic image Roz!!! I'm amazed at your creativity and skill. This would have ribboned, I'm sorry you couldn't enter it, but still this image ROCKS, and remember you might not have taken this if not for the challenge, so all ends well, because this is a superb image for your portfolio and your wall!!
A great sequence made up of really strong images and a great capture of the ball in flight once again. Good job it was deemed as not meeting the challenge rules, as nobody else would have stood a chance against this.
Another note; If this isn't Time Lapse then what is? You sure couldn't have produced this shot at 1/125. The only way to capture this shot would be over time. I guess the rule makers have a non written rule that the time must be over hours in the same frame as well as an object you can't control. I entered the challenge but I'm not sure my photo will pass either. I can't wait to see the images that make it. Then check the forums, I'll bet it gets nasty. From what I have read so far, most folks agree with you.
As I stated in one of my forum post I think the rules are too narrow for the challenge "Time Lapse" I agree with you roz, your photo would scream time lapse IMO. Great Job!
Legal or not this is a kickass shot! Seeing the ball at the end of the sequence really makes the photo for me. I find myself forgetting that this is all about our own photography ultimately, with DPC voting as an influence/guide - but it's a fantastic image for your portfolio and perhaps a whole new technique to play with - so who cares if it doesn't make a challenge (and a new/test/pioneer ruleset at that). You should get this one into DPC Prints methinks...would make a lovely present for a golfer. Anyhow, congrats on a fantastic shot.
edit: p.s. any chance you could put in your shutter speed/aperture/ISO details? Am interested to know what it took to almost freeze that ball (and his motion).
Well thanks for clarifying that - I understood the rules in the same way as you did... I guess the time lapse has to be much shorter than the span of golf shot. On your image, I love the colors and think the lapse is a great addition.
You've got to be kidding me. Very irksome when the decisions are so random. But, we're all humans, and as long as humans are making decision for other humans, it's going to be bizarre at times. Maybe there will still be a turnaround.
That said - I LOVE this!!! Absolutely fantastic - the clarity and the colors as well as the POV. I can see you lying in the grass - someone should have taken a photo of you! lolol!!
Nice photo, irrespective of the time lapse issue. Great sky, nice compositio. You did a nice job with the overlap between the golf club of frame 1 and the back of the golfer on frame 2.
Regardless of whether this is allowed in the challenge or not you should comfort yourself with the knowledge that you have taken and created an amazing image
I love the POV and the marvellous way you have combined the images without any degradation.
Superb colouring as well
I really think this is one that you should print large and give to Tim, he will adore it and it would be an amazing addition to any wall
i'm putting this in here just in case other ppl dont understand the time lapse concept like me ..
I have to admit, Roz, I must not understand the concept, because I would totally think your entry is legal. In fact, I still do. I mean, it is a narrow, natural sequence of events, isn't it? If you haven't done so already, you might mention your exchange with the site council in the forums, because I expect other people will submit similar photos.
PS. When I read your photo caption "Not time lapse", I thought you were telling me that this is three different people! LOL
