Cool, I'll throw away my field guide and invite some DNMC'ers on my next hike, since they have an innate sense of which berries are poisonous.

------------------------

This was not meant as a shoehorn. It is an example of something you might not know without having read about it ..and that was how I interpreted the challenge. Book Smarts is knowledge you gain from reading books, that isn't otherwise obvious, and it was contrasted with Street Smarts - knowledge gained from experience.

Thank you to those who at least tried to give it some thought.

I have to say... I didn't get it at first until I read your definition in your comments part, but now I understand. It's a beautiful picture! Great job.

This is an absolutely beautiful shot, Colleen! I would have given you an 8 or 9 had I voted. You really got robbed - and I do understand the link to the challenge with no trouble - if you don't have book smarts, you might just eat that poisonous berry right up. ROBBED!!!

You know, this is just my cynical take on this shot. In all reality, it was probably a stretch to meet the challenge however it was done very well. The detail was extraordinary.

However, had this been a shot of a fabulous sunset, the northern lights, Cannon Beach, or something similar that was just as equally if not more removed from the challenge, the voting population would have gone ga-ga over it and the very same people that DNMC'd you would have given you high scores!

You only have to meet the challenge if your image is not a cliche shot!

Just my CYNICAL take on things.

I have to agree with all the other comments. I love the shot, but don't understand the link to the challenge. I hope you will explain it in the photog comments.

Not sure how it fits the challenge

Good picture, where is book smart though? My rating is not putting down the good quality of the picture.

I don't know how it relates to the challenge, but it's a nice shot.
11/26/2007 06:26:36 PM
off target
11/26/2007 05:28:43 PM
and how does this relate to book smarts?
11/26/2007 03:46:39 PM
Hm, I don't understand.
11/26/2007 03:01:09 PM
I'm guessing this represents book smarts because you know it is poisonous, but that's just too far a stretch of the theme for me, sorry.
11/26/2007 11:15:34 AM
Fantastic shot but for book smarts?
11/25/2007 09:43:23 PM
This photo is very pleasing to the eye. The colours work very well together.
11/25/2007 10:45:29 AM
If this is some clever connection to the challenge (like the plant is named bookicus smarticus or something) I've completely missed it.
11/25/2007 02:17:24 AM
pretty cool
11/24/2007 10:57:16 PM
No relevance to topic.
11/24/2007 08:10:02 PM
I love the colors and DoF, but I do not see how this fits the challenge.
11/24/2007 12:16:20 AM
Neat shot, I'm just not sure how it relates to the topic at hand.
11/23/2007 04:44:05 PM
I give up. What does this picture have to do with "book smarts?"
11/23/2007 01:10:52 PM
huh?
love the pic but... book smart?
11/23/2007 01:05:49 PM
I get where you're trying to go with this, but, I wonder if it will succeed for the challenge? I love the shot, maybe for another challenge.
11/23/2007 09:34:00 AM
Technicals: 1.5/2 - a tad too dark; DOF is too shallow

Composition: 1/2 - focus point is too close to the edge, brightest area (=most attracting to the eye) is OOF; little compositional effort visible

Challenge Relation: 0/2

Originality/Creativity: 0/2

Overall Impact: 0/2

2 (challenge relation overweighted)
11/22/2007 09:08:41 AM
Unrelated to the challenge and random use of DOF
11/21/2007 08:03:31 PM
How is this "Book Smarts"????DNMC Nice photo otherwise...
11/21/2007 07:08:35 PM
hmmm, is this entered into the right challenge.. Beautiful shot, but maybe best for free study.. I'm confused.. :-)
11/21/2007 07:03:13 PM
book smarts--don't get it. Beautiful photo though.
11/21/2007 10:52:51 AM
This is a really nice shot but I'm not getting the challenge from it. Well shot though
11/21/2007 10:48:18 AM
Ummm...wrong challenge??
11/21/2007 09:22:14 AM
Im not sure how this meets the challenge
11/21/2007 05:29:57 AM
beautiful image - i actually wonder if knowing which plants are poisonous requires more street smarts than book smarts...
11/21/2007 01:49:41 AM
Can you please explain the concept?
11/21/2007 12:34:39 AM
great photo but I don't see book smarts here.
