Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate all the specific comments. Clearly lighting is an issue here, and I have no practice lighting indoor subjects. (I usually shoot outdoors, or in bright natural light indoors.) I think my next stop must be the technical tutorials Lighting II: Studio Effects and Intro to Flashes

I gotta say, after two years of using a point'n'shoot, it was great fun to try my husband's new camera with real manual controls.

Too much shadow and bottom is too hot. I think filtered lighting would be better than flash.

The lighting is not quite that good technically... more focused, brighter lighting would have improved the picture dramatically.

Interesting idea. The shadows are heavy and the woodwork in the background are distracting. The currency is well captured

I like the concept, but I'm not diggin' the background. Plain white would be fine, but that's sort of off-white and those ridges take away from the concentration of the photo.

The concept is nice but here are couple of things that would improve this shot:

1- Eliminating The harsh shadows. This can be accomplished by using an indirect lighting instead of directing the flash straight at the subject.

2- The door in the background is distracting and makes the shot feel amateurish.

If it was just a plain wall with no shadows, this would've been a winner in my opinion.

I don't like the door background, but the notes are nice and sharp.

The lighting is a bit off on this one. It is a good idea though, I would try to reshoot this even though it is after the challeng deadline.
