These folks have been placing a marker on their hillside for each US uniformed service person killed in Iraq.

Their property is directly across the street from the local BART (light rail) station and alongside a major freeway, so it is seen by several thousands of people every day.

All editing done with IrfanView -- a great free image editor/browser for Windows.

-Resize to 640x480
-Sharpen
-SaveAs JPEG at quality 92/100 = 148kb

Here are a closer-up view and a panoramic of the whole hill combined from six images:

Thanks for all the comments -- I thought this did surprisingly well!

I had taken a tighter-in shot as a couple people suggested, but I really wanted to show the broad expansiveness of the memorial/protest more than focus on the individual markers -- I figured as long as the figures on the sign were legible it would work.

I did try making it grayscale, but it was just too tonally flat to use without editing not permitted in this challenge. Also in a "real" photojournalistic situation, I'd have probably cropped out the road and part of the sky as was suggested.

My camera doesn't have a very wide-angle setting; what I really would have wanted is more like this panoramic, stitched from six hand-held shots using Autostitch.

nice idea. I would have gotten closer...you have more trees and sky than what your subject is.

I think this would have worked better in B&W. I think it would have brought the saddness out a little more. This way, with all the colors it is cofusing cause all the colors are bright and cheery and the message is not. Not bad though

Conveys a powerful message, but I find the road (or railway?) in the foreground a little distracting.

What a great idea. This need to happen on the National Mall, Lafayette Park in sight of the White House. Maybe MoveOn.org would help organize the photo Op. I live in DC -- just tell me when and I'll be there with camera and crosses.

Nice idea for the title. But the image does not have the drama it should..maybe you should have waited for the correct time of the day to get better lighting. or maybe a closer approach with bigger crosses and less sky would have helped.
