the bars and the child seem to me, to be the subject, making them the positive space. the negative space, would then be the trees and the person to the right. the neg. space its self doesn't seem to interesting, however the photo as a whole is very nice. You have gotten the lighting and the focus right. you have taken the shot from the childs level, and it is overall a good photo. good luck in the challenge. ~hbunch7187~

Cute photo.

I think this would have more impact if the kid was frowning/crying, and maybe if there was less DOF so there would be more emphasis on the foreground bars and face. I had considered trying to submit a photo of an empty prison cell; this is the only photo I see which alludes to that interpretation...

i am sure you got crop closer comments but I like the other kid half in the pic cute

I believe the contest was called negative space. Unless you think your child has negative space, I don't see the point.

I like this....and it would have done well with me in the Candid challenge...

I don't see ANY negative space here. Otherwise, it is an uninteresting shot. It IS in focus, but the cropping should have dealt with the adult on the right. 2 Jak

On this shot I think that you should have got both kids in the shot sitting right next to each other. They're in jail. 5

Nice natural light and colour, background it too busy to make the negative space pop.

i'm sorry, in my opinion, this does not depict negative space, there's too much going on throughout the picture. as for the photo itself, i love the shot, the angle of the baseball cap on his head is perfect, and so is the grin. i would probably crop the right side a bit to remove the person that is partially visible there. -- gr8photos.

That's an awfully cute kid, but it's lacking in negative space

I'm having trouble deciding what is the negative space here... if it is the bars, they are competing with the subject for attention... - jmsetzler
